Both of Colonial's campuses will remain quiet all day as we are closed for the Dr. MLK, Jr. holiday. Classes resume Tuesday, January 22 on schedule.
The online Annual Parent Survey was released this past week. Results from the survey will help inform our school and district about our current environment and feedback on how to improve. The survey consists of demographic questions, followed by a number of questions that require a rating, concluding with an opportunity to respond to open ended questions. The survey is available in Arabic, English, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish.
We value your opinion and ask that you take few minutes complete this survey.
All responses to this survey are anonymous. Our goal is to ensure that at least 20% of our Colonial parents complete this survey. The survey link will be available through Friday, March 15, 2019.
Enjoy this day in honor of America's greatest civil rights champion. I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus tomorrow morning.
It's Great To Be A Grenadier!

Paula Cortes-Weil
Orchestra student Paula Cortes-Weil represented Colonial HS performing in the 2018-19 All-State Honors Orchestra held as part of the 2019 FMEA All State Conference in Tampa two weekends ago. Paula spent 3 days in intensive rehearsals with other musicians from all over Florida. The weekend culminated with a sold-out performance Saturday evening.
Paula is currently the principal violinist in the Colonial High School Chamber Orchestra and Symphony.
A special Colonial congratulations to Paula for all her dedication and commitment to the Orchestra program!

HIGHLIGHT: Biology Teachers

A look behind the curtain early in the second semester . . .
Biology teachers collaborating during an articulation day. Teachers are utilizing data to engage in a "deep dive" of which standards to remediate and how to differentiate for students. What you see above is part of the teachers' ongoing efforts to give our students the very best educational experience they can provide while attending CHS.

Tracking the Lil' Grenadier early in 2019 . . .
|
. . . Colonial's internal staff recognition system for those teachers and staff members that travel "the extra mile" in their daily efforts.
Ms. Mullins hands off "Lil' Grenadier" to 12th Grade Dean Eddie Witham
It is with great pleasure that I present the Lil' Grenadier to Mr. Eddie Witham, our 12th grade Dean. Often a group of unsung heroes, I have known Mr. Witham nearly 20 years and have watched the discipline office truly evolve under his excellent guidance. Students are not only counseled on the issues that brought them into the office to start with but they are counseled/advised to begin looking into their future and making the right decisions. Mr. Witham also handles our various security and weather drills and monitors out fire reports.
Thank you Mr. Witham for all you do!
~ Ms. Mullins
Note: Ms. Mullins had originally received the Lil' Grenadier from Mr. Au-Yeung. Just below is what he had to say about her kindness.
She always says great things about the kids and about the dining room and cafeteria staff. She is always helpful with assisting us in keeping the dining areas clean. She is very supportive of the students and helps them clean up after themselves. This week's Lil' Grenadier award goes to Deborah Mullins!

Mrs. Blanco hands off the Lil' Grenadier to Ms. Sepulveda
I am honored to pass my Lil' ESOL Grenadier to Ms. Sepulveda!
Ms. Sepulveda's (Mathematics teacher, above right) first priority is always the well-being and happiness of her students. She puts her heart into everything she does, and goes out of her way to help any staff members or students around her. She's extraordinarily talented at connecting with her students as well as being a dedicated, and caring teacher. She and her marvelous tutors, Romy Jreissati and Timothy Kaufman, really take an interest in the well-being of each of their students.
We are grateful to be working with such an excellent teacher everyday!

Ms. Burrage passes along the Lil' Grenadier with heartfelt thanks . . .
Thank you
Ms. Parisi (Media specialist) and
Ms. Weil (Media clerk) for sharing the joy of Li'l Gren's company. Your endless support keeps me going. I love you so much!
Now, it's the 11th Grade ELA PLC's turn to share Li'l Gren's wisdom.
Mr. Zayas, Mr. Jewell, Ms. Soto and
Ms. Steen are outstanding teachers who keep on giving. There might be days that it's easier to quit, but their commitment to provide quality education is stronger than any challenges.
Ms. Espinet, our PLC lead, is our rock. She is the strength that motivates us to do our best everyday. For more than 26 years, she is the light that guides our students to strive for success.
~ Ms. Burrage, Language Arts
Note: Mrs. Burrage originally received the Lil' Grenadier from our amazing Media Center team . . . the "Library Ladies." Just below is what they had to say about her and their own experience leading into the Winter Break last month.
Lil' Grenadier has learned all about the many things that happen in our space, has assisted us in a variety of chores, gave us new perspective on things, has become an expert on handling technology issues, has learned to listen to our patrons' needs, did some awesome book talks, collaborated with staff members, and met lots of new friends; we loved having him as a part of our team!

Now for what you've been waiting for, the BIG announcement. It is with great pleasure that Virginia and I have passed Lil' Grenadier on to Irish Angelica Burrage, one of our new ELA teachers here at Colonial HS this school year. She is a bright light with lots of ideas to help engage our students, is quite technology savvy, is a part of our DCTL team, supports literacy initiatives, and eagerly shares her love of reading with her students (which is quite contagious).
With the holiday break coming, between his "change of guard" Lil' Grenadier asked if he could remain in our Media Center until the New Year rather than be alone for the vacation. He had many adventures while with us and felt more comfortable keeping watch in the hub of the school. He is now with Mrs. Burrage and ready for his new adventures and experiences.
Before signing out we wish to thank Mr. Stout for thinking of the Library Ladies when it was his time to pass the torch, for all that he does to keep our technology up and running, for his friendship, as well as his patience when things get crazy! Thank you, Thomas!
~ Ms. Parisi, Media Specialist
