Find out what's happening with the Christ Church Master Plan with the Town Hall Update here. |
More than a year ago, President Trump made some controversial remarks about the protests and counter-protests in Charlottesville, VA. (I'm not using the comments to bash the President, but as a jumping off point for the sake of this reflection.) The comments have come
back into my consciousness lately with the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting and as we prepare to commemorate the 80
th
anniversary of Kristallnacht. Many of us remember the torch-wielding white supremacists that marched through the community shouting anti-Semitic slogans, and later congregated with weapons, shields, and helmets for a daytime march. There were also scores of counter-protestors. Amongst those counter-protestors were members of a group known as Antifa, the first time many of us were introduced to the far-left. Although there is still debate about who is to blame and for what in some circles, I have relied on two friends and colleagues who are serving parishes in Charlottesville. My college chaplain is now serving a UCC parish in that city, and a priest raised up from my home congregation serves an Episcopal parish there. I know from their first-hand accounts that most of the counter protesters were non-violent, many motivated by their Christian beliefs.

All Saints Services |
At our All Saints Services this past weekend, we celebrated the lives of those we love, both living and dead with liturgies that included the renewal of our Baptismal vows, the Baptism of the three Jordan children, reading the names of the Departed and beautiful music, sung by our adult and children's choirs. It was a poignant time of reflection and renewal.

Community Thanksgiving Worship Service |
|
The annual Thanksgiving Community Worship service will take place the coming Sunday, November 11, at 4:00 pm, at First Baptist Church St. Simons Island. This special time of worship includes hymns, prayers, Old and New Testament readings and an outreach offering in addition to a sermon, which will be given by the Rev. Tom Jones, from St. Simons United Methodist Church. The Christian faith community on St. Simons gathers together just a few times for worship, which makes this a special Thanksgiving tradition.

RenewalWorks |
|
The singular emphasis on love of God and neighbor provides the foundation for RenewalWorks, a ministry in the Episcopal Church that focuses on spiritual growth by deepening love of God and neighbor in the lives of congregations, in the lives of ministries that animate those congregations, and in the lives of the individuals who bring life to those ministries.
We are using the RenewalWorks to evaluate our members and our congregation and make plans for the future.
The first step in this process is the congregational survey. Please take a few minutes out of your schedule to use the link below and answer questions about your spiritual life and your life at Christ Church. We will use this information with a team of parishioners to determine strategies and plans to improve our spiritual vitality.
The link can be found
here
.
Each person in a household over the age of 16 is encouraged to take the survey. If this work sounds interesting to you, and you'd like to be a part of the parish RenewalWorks team, please email Father Tom at [email protected].

Christmas at Sea |
It's hard to believe, but Christmas is less than 8 weeks away! As much as we hate to rush the season, it's important to start thinking of those who need help and support during the holidays.
One group with whom Christ Church actively collaborates, is the International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.
If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found
here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.

Thank You to Our Office Volunteers! |
|
On Thursday, November 1, our hardworking office volunteers got a short break from their labors, as we celebrated them with a luncheon at the Public House, in Sea Palms Resort. These dedicated folks work tirelessly to keep the office running smoothly at Christ Church, by answering phones, assisting tourists, taking messages, helping with mailings and endlessly stuffing bulletins. We are so grateful for each and every volunteer! Thank you!

Town Hall Meetings - Update |
The recent Town Hall meetings were a success as the Vestry and Building Committee unveiled the proposed plans to be considered as next steps in our Master Plan Process. Links to the presentation and further details on the major parts of the plan can be found below. Everyone will be invited to participate in a feasibility survey from Sinclair Townes and Co., the consultants the Vestry has retained to investigate what we can reasonably afford as we look to the future.
The Vestry encourages everyone to familiarize themselves with the plans and prayerful in their discernment. As we shift into 2019 with a feasibility study report in hand, the Vestry will be determining next steps.
