We Need YOU in 2019

Now is the "quieter" time of year where we all try to catch our breath and think about what the year ahead might hold. If you're like me, you're also thinking -- wow, this school year is blazing by and I can't believe my son/daughter is already half-way through X grade!

A great way to slow down and treasure this charmed early elementary school time is to get involved in parent volunteering. The PTO is never a closed or "full" group and we always have jobs to be done -- or room for new ideas you might bring to us. This past week, parent volunteers who helped with the MLK Day of Service project had their hearts warmed, watching the kids make memory kits for the elderly, including writing very sweet, expressive notes of kindness.

We on the Exec Board are beginning the slating process for the 2018/2019 open Exec positions. This entails us forming a group of parent volunteers to meet and nominate names for the slate. The proposed slate is then posted for the parent community to view and give feedback on. Then, this spring, the current Exec Board votes on the slate. If you are interested in finding out more about what the Exec Board does, please contact me, or former president Nidhi Singh, to learn more. Also this spring, we'll begin to think about which parents could lead our various committees next school year.

Our school has a long history of parents serving the school and running a lot of the "extra" programs and events that make HW such a special place.  Parents who have served on the PTO will tell you it's how they made some of their closest friends, how they got to know teachers better -- and how they got to feel a true part of their child's school experience. At the end of this year we'll "graduate" many parents whose youngest is a fourth grader. We hope some of you "newbies" will step up to fill their shoes, so you too can enjoy a fulfilling PTO experience!

In the meantime, we still have volunteer opportunities such as helping out in the IDEA Lab on Fridays (there are many behind-the-scenes projects you can do with fellow parents) or helping with recycling/composting at lunch. We also have a Family Dance coming up on February 10th, and can always use extra hands to help.

We hope you can join our efforts, if you haven't already!

Kendal Reis (HW PTO president)

Join the PTO Nominating Committee!

We are looking for HW parents who are interested in joining the nominating committee for next year's PTO Exec Board!

The committee will meet once with past president, Nidhi Singh, in February to help determine individuals (you can nominate yourself) who may be nominated for next year's open exec board positions (VP, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary).

Contact Nidhi Singh at [email protected] if interested.

ALERT! Lost and Found is Over-Crowded and All Items Will Be Donated Soon!

When you visit HW in February for your child's teacher conference, please look through the Lost and Found, located in the front lobby.  Any items that have not been retrieved by March 1st will be donated to the Winnetka Thrift Shop, as we have run out of room and it's creating too much clutter in the school hallway. Thank you so much for your help!

Please Volunteer to Help With Recycling and Composting!
Be a part of educating our future generations to think before you toss. We need volunteers to continue this program and the best part is, our planet will thank you!

Online Kindergarten Registration Open
Kindergarten pre-registration for 2019-2020 is now open. Children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2019, are eligible to enroll. The District's Kindergarten Committee and Central PTO unanimously approved shifting to an online process versus an on-site process. This shift minimizes the time needed to pre-register and respects the busy schedules of our families.

The Registration process is completed in two steps:
  1. Complete an online pre-registration form: click here
  2. Provide proof of residency (documents can be uploaded online): child(ren)'s original birth certificate and a parent photo ID will need to be provided in person. Opportunities to do so will be made available in Spring 2019. The  list of documents that will meet these requirements is here: https://www.winnetka36.org/parents/prospectivefamilies
If you have any questions, please contact the District Office at  847-446-9400 .

Kudos
A special thanks to Committee Chair Effie Karavites and her team of helpers (Amy Kay, Anita John, Nissa Cox, Meghan Miller, Laura Roach, Kendal Reis) for supervising our Hubbard Woods Day of Service. The students worked with volunteers from The Kindness Connection to make Memory Kits for seniors. The kits included crossword puzzles, picture frames made by the students, artwork and handmade cards. It was a wonderful afternoon and a reminder of how lucky we are to live in such a caring community.
