Help One More Student Stay

Have you ever wondered why the student who is doing well in your class suddenly drops? Or why the student who was getting a "C" doesn't return after one poor test grade? The most troubling is the student who is passing all along and then just doesn't show up for the final. We've all had students in our classes who suddenly drop out, and we seldom get an explanation for their disappearance. We might attribute it to family problems, work issues, test anxiety, or unpreparedness; but the truth is that we may never know why. Conversely, there are a number of students who stay in our classes all semester long and who, unbeknownst to us, were on the verge of dropping out but chose not to. Exploring the Future of TEaCHing: Innovative TECHniques in Higher Education
In early November, nine adjunct faculty members involved in Communities of Practice and staff from the Academy for Teaching Excellence, traveled to Indianapolis for the 22nd Annual Facet Associate Faculty and Lecturer (FALCON) Conference. The conference, designed specifically for adjunct faculty and organized by Indiana University, focuses on practical classroom applications.

Harper 50th Anniversary Retro Holiday Gathering for All Faculty/Staff
Join us for some holiday cheer as we celebrate Harper's proud past with the musical stylings of Peter Aglinskas, classical and jazz guitarist and adjunct faculty in the music department, playing music through the decades interspersed with festive favorites. Mingle with colleagues while enjoying a hot cocoa and cider bar and holiday treats.

Did you miss Teaching Naked's José Bowen and his insights on student learning?
José Antonio Bowen, author of Teaching Naked and co-author of Teaching Naked Techniques, headlined Harper's 9th Annual Assessment Conference and Share Fair on Friday, September 29. Dr. Bowen shared his insights about student learning in two sessions: the keynote, "Assessment as Strategy: You Are What You Measure" and an extended workshop, "Teaching Naked Techniques: A Practical Workshop on Designing Better Classes." Additional fabulous information was presented at the conference by Vicki Atkinson, Anita Rehberg, Jennifer Godish, Lisa Blaylock, Julie Ellefson, and Khursheed Ichhaporia!
