Speech and Public Speaking

In Speech and Public Speaking the students learned about various forms of communication and participated in various exercises such as diction, use of emphasis, tone and body language.

They wrote their first Speech, presented it and filmed each other presenting it. The film was showcased at Parent Night.

In collaboration with a Poetry Unit in Language Arts, the students have been working on The Raven, by Edgar Allen Poe, which was presented  on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at 11:15 am in the Big Room.

This quarter the students will be applying their speech writing and delivery skills to a formal debate. On Friday, January 11, 2019, we had our first Debate class and the students played a round of Four Corners Debate.

I look forward to working with the students on their debate!

Thank you,

Ms. Sylvia Aslanian

4th Grade Language Arts

I am thrilled to tell you about what we are doing in Language Arts for 4th Grade! Ms. Bella Kemp, a former MMS student and current Studio teacher, has arranged for the students to write pen pals at a school in Tanzania! The students are so excited, and are doing an excellent job crafting their letters introducing themselves and asking their pen pals a few questions. We hope to continue this correspondence throughout the rest of the school year.

Ms. Bella Kemp visited Tanzania last summer where she taught English at Mnini Matoli Primary School (check out her blogpost HERE!) When she contacted me about the possibility of pen pals, I was inspired to center our upcoming non-fiction unit in Language Arts around Africa. My goal is for students to learn how to identify text structures and text features, and use them in their own writing, while widening understanding of the diverse peoples, cultures, and environments of Africa.

Be sure to ask your student about their pen pal, and as always please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Ms. Jennifer Kuntz
