MADE IN THE SHADE!
WERE YOU THERE?
Thanks to organizers, participants, and attendees, the first-ever, free, all-community Shadelands Made in the Shade block party was a huge hit, drawing close to 1,000 people!

The Gathering Space at The Orchards was hopping on Saturday, September 29, a gorgeous autumn day in Walnut Creek, with 30 festive tenant booths, demonstrations, giveaways, food trucks, craft beer tastings, and crowd-pleasing live music, courtesy of fan favorite East Bay Mudd. Kicking off the party were students from Contra Costa School of Performing Arts performing The Star Spangled Banner.

Shadelands' economic vitality and community spirit were on display as hundreds of introductions and connections were made among businesses, nonprofits, and neighbors.

Made in the Shade was sponsored by the Shadelands Steering Committee and The Orchards at Walnut Creek.
SPEAKING OF MADE IN THE SHADE . . .
Did you know that Shadelands is home to several products that are actually developed and/or made in Shadelands?

Quick Mount PV , located at 2700 Mitchell Drive, manufactures building-code-compliant, waterproof mounts and accessories used to secure solar electric (PV) and solar thermal (hot water) systems to a wide variety of residential and commercial rooftops. Quick Mount PV pioneered the adoption of roofing best practices in the solar industry and has grown to become the industry's leading seller of flashed rooftop solar mounting systems. All company products are designed, engineered, and manufactured in Shadelands.

Del Monte Foods , located at 205 N. Wiget Lane, is the main research and product development center for all Del Monte. At the Shadelands facility, teams develop new fruit, vegetable, tomato, and broth products. They design and develop the packaging that will work specifically for the products they develop. Then, the product designs are sent to Del Monte plants throughout the country and co-packers in the United States and abroad for final production.

Interesting fact: Del Monte, which has called Shadelands home for more than forty years, was the first major U.S. food producer to voluntarily adopt food nutritional labeling in 1971.

MIKE HESS BREWING OPENS TASTING ROOM AND COZY OUTDOOR PATIO
Mike Hess Brewing , a premier craft brewery in San Diego, has opened its first Northern California taproom at The Orchards in Walnut Creek. Born and raised in Walnut Creek, owner Mike Hess decided to return to his hometown, where he still has family and friends, to open his fourth craft beer establishment, located at 2313 Oak Grove Road, next to Patra Indian Grill.

Influenced by Shadelands' vibrancy and welcoming atmosphere, neighboring merchants, close-knit community, and stunning oak trees, Hess knew Shadelands was a natural fit for Mike Hess Brewing.

The taproom (tasting only, no brewing) has a tap of 20 varieties, running about 18 at a time. The distinctive outdoor patio boasts a large, platform deck built by Hess and his team that hugs an oak tree, bar tables and stools, comfy chairs and sofas, and a big screen TV. Already a popular place to buy a brew and stay awhile, customers agree, Mike Hess is a family-friendly, dog-friendly "chill place to be."

EASTERSEALS BAY AREA KICKS OFF #GIVINGTUESDAY CAMPAIGN
Easterseals Bay Area (ESBA), one of Northern California’s leading organizations caring for people with autism and other developmental disabilities, has kicked off its 2018 #GivingTuesday campaign with a Call to Action and a Wish List on behalf of the young people it serves.

ESBA needs the community’s help to build out its library of educational materials for its new service lines of interest-based social clubs for clients with autism between the ages of 5 and 13. The clubs focus primarily on STEAM-based activities, such as robotics, chemistry, engineering, and art, while providing social skills training to children with autism throughout Northern California.

The community can support Easterseals Bay Area’s new social clubs through financial donations and by mailing or dropping off sealed and packaged items from its Wish List to its headquarters in the Walnut Creek Executive Park.
