Students participate in district's History Day in preparation for county competition
Approximately 160 Folsom Cordova students in grades 4-12 from schools throughout the district participated in the district's History Day event on Jan. 16.

Students from Mather Heights, Theodore Judah, Sandra Gallardo, Mills, Mitchell, Folsom Middle, Folsom High and Vista presented history projects to judges made up of teachers, school board members, community members, museum directors and parents at History Day.

The History Day event is designed to prepare students who are entering to compete in the Sacramento County History Day competition which will be held March 2, 2019 at Inderkum High.

Here are some photo highlights from the district's History Day event. As you'll see in the photos our students were very creative and detail oriented in their project presentations.

The event was held at Mitchell Middle School in Rancho Cordova.

Sac County AcaDeca students compete in Folsom, welcome displaced Butte students
The annual, and very prestigious 2019 Sacramento County Academic Decathlon , or AcaDeca for short, took place last week at Folsom High School. Proud to host this event, the Bulldogs who were reigning champions last year, came in 2nd place this year lead by teachers Melinda Wilson and Ryan Peterson. Vista del Lago sent their largest team to date, and placed 6th! A high ranking for the team who got new leadership this year with teacher, Brianna Willis.

This year's theme was "The 1960s: A Transformational Decade." If you are new to AcaDeca, imagine a day-long competition, in which students prove their knowledge and skills in 10 different competitive arenas; such as speech, panel interviews and several tests. The day culminates with the Super Quiz; a game-show like setting with cheering onlookers and supporters. This is the Olympics of academics!

What made the day extra special were the schools from Butte County who joined us. Unable to host their own AcaDeca competition due to the devastation of the Camp Fire, the Sacramento County Office of Education invited their schools to join. This gave the school districts and local businesses in Sacramento county the perfect opportunity to give teachers from Butte County, donated school supplies raised by Helping Teachers Helping Students and as a part of our Sister School promise . What was even more remarkable, were the many teachers who gave their own school supplies to their colleagues in Butte County. We all cheered for the students yesterday, and cheered extra loud for those who have lost so much.
