Spread the Smiles
We know that these last couple months have been unlike any other and that we have all had to adjust to our new way of life in quarantine. We hope that along with all the change we have experienced, there have been moments of laughter and lots of smiles - and we would love to hear about them! Please share a fun moment or experience you have had while staying at home - whether it's a piece of writing, or maybe a photo - we would love to share a smile with the rest of the community.
If you would like to contribute,

Dear Shir Chadash community,
I am writing this on the morning of Tisha B’Av, just as the day is beginning to make its journey from grief towards hope. That journey continues after the fast is over, giving its name to this coming Shabbat:
Nachamu
, the Shabbat of comfort. It’s also the Shabbat on which we read the first paragraph of the
Shema
in the Torah.
This year, I find myself especially drawn to the line
ve-ahavta et Adonai elohekha b’chol levavkha u’v’chol nafshecha u’v’chol me-odekha - “you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might.”
Why should we be offered three different ways of doing the same thing?
Earlier this week I read an article about different ways people work from home. Some are ‘segregators,’ who try to keep boundaries between their work and home life as firm as possible; others are ‘integrators,’ who combine episodes of work and home over the day, toggling between them.
I think perhaps the
Shema
is telling us that we don’t all have the same way to find spiritual nourishment - especially during a pandemic. As I look around the community, I see very different stratagems.
‘Heart’ people are those who are sustained by connection. Phone calls, socially distant walks, doorstep visits, online services - all of them serve to feed the heart.
‘Soul’ people are the ones who who dive inward. I hear a lot about book clubs, about rediscovering the pleasure of reading or cooking or crafting.
But what about the ‘might?’ It’s tempting to say that’s the people who work out a lot more than they used to - but I think there’s more to it than that. Over and over again I am seeing people put their talents to work, adapting them to find meaning or help others. I think of Peter Seltzer pivoting his business to provide medical equipment; I think of Will Samuels who has become our de facto Zoom maven. Maybe that
meod
word is really about finding the ‘od’ - the little extra spark inside - and using our ingenuity to keep ourselves uplifted, even during this most challenging time.
Have a read of the
Shema
this Shabbat and see if you find yourself there.
I wish us a comforting, nourishing Shabbat.
Rabbi Silver

Prayer for Medical Workers
Please continue to say this prayer for all those who work to keep us healthy and safe.
|
|
Holy One
We ask your blessing for our doctors
for our nurses
for all our hospital workers
who stand between the living and the dying
as Aaron once stood.
Help them to know they are not alone
as they undertake the overwhelming holy work
of deploying and organizing,
of caring and healing and comforting.
Bring them strength
and fortitude
and grace.
May the work of their hands be blessed.
And we say,
Amen.
