Counselor's Corner with Ms. Carter
Hello Bay Laurel Families! This month kicks off our character dispositions of the month; Autonomy & Independence. As I think about these character traits, I wonder how I can help my own children become responsible, reliable, and grow not only as an individuals but a upstanding, participating citizens of our community.
I am in an amazing position in seeing our students working together, collaborating, as well as making independent choices growing as individuals as well as part of their Bay Laurel communities.

Below are a couple of articles that discuss ways that we all can help our children grow. Please check them out:

Article topic- Tips to raising successful kids at school, home, and the community:

Parent Tip: Chores are a good thing and here is why (my favorite is #7) :
Why do kids need chores? Please see the remainder of the article: https://www.yourmodernfamily.com/age-appropriate-chores-for-kids/
1.    Chores help kids feel needed.
2.    Chores give them a feeling of importance.
3.    Chores teach responsibility.
4.    Chores teach independence.
5.    Chores create a work ethic in our children that will help build that character that we want them to have.
6.    Chores cut back on entitlement.
7.    Chores help out the family, leaving more time for PLAY as a family. If your children learn to help now, you will have children that will be able to work later.

Homework Tip:  Last month's luggage tag helped them in being responsible for items to and from school. How is that going? Another way to help them become more independent is to help organize their binder and backpack. As adults, we show them how at first. Help them to purge what is unnecessary (trash), save in a drawer or plastic bin what they will need for later, and find a home in their binder/folders for what they need now. See how well they can maintain. You may need to check in weekly until they build the skill.
Thank you for stopping by Counselor’s Corner. I look forward to working with your children and invite you to contact me with any questions, concerns, or thoughts. I am on campus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 3:00pm and Wednesdays from 9:30am to 1:00pm.

Thank you,
Heather Carter
