Letter from the President

Dear Friend of The Rep,

Here's to hoping the worst of winter is behind us! We hope the cold and snowy weather didn't keep you from seeing our beautiful production of  Bus Stop in January, but if you're still holed up in your house, now's as good a weekend as any to get out and smell the air. Especially because love is in the air!

No, seriously, quite literally, actually:  "Love Is In The Air"! That's the title of our special cabaret fundraiser, running both Friday and Saturday evenings this weekend, with food, wine, a raffle, and a silent auction each night as well. Each show will be filled with performances by some of the best talent in the area, so bring your loved ones and celebrate Valentine's Day early with the Toledo Rep!

And while we don't have any full stage productions going on this month, that doesn't mean we haven't been busy. Our in-house light coordinator Paul Alday has been working hard with our volunteer electricians Mark Koester and Jim Norton to finish up the final electrical upgrades to our stage lights - these improvements are going to give us much more versatility with our lights going forward.  We can't thank them enough for all the time and resources that have gone into these lighting upgrades.

Educational programming also continues this month. Our Young Rep Ed winter session "Rep Rocks!" is well underway with a student showcase on February 23rd. And February 16th we are excited to be starting a 4-week  "Building an Audition Portfolio" workshop for youth ages 7-17.

For adults, the beginning of our next round of  Improv classes has been delayed a little, but the good news is there are still a few spaces available at each level. Those classes will start on March 10th and 14th. We'll also be bringing Adult Acting classes back in March as well - stay tuned as more details about those will be coming soon!

Finally, our next production is less than a month away, and with Black History Month upon us, it is especially worthy of a shout out.  August Wilson's Fences will open on our stage March 1st. Winner of the Pulitzer Price for Drama, seven Tony Awards, and  an Academy Award and Golden Globe winning film adaptation starring Denzel Washington and Viola Davis, August Wilson's  Fences is a powerful depiction of African American life in the 1950s. Truly, it's a phenomenal piece of American literature with a brilliant cast and we are thrilled to be presenting it on our 10th Street Stage. Tickets are on sale now!

See you at the theatre.

Christopher A. McAnall
President, Board of Trustees

Place: Paris

The greatest of French farces, perhaps the greatest farce ever written. Raymonde Chandebise suspects that her husband, Victor, a placid and successful insurance executive, is secretly having an affair. To find out, she and her friend Lucienne write him an anonymous love letter suggesting a rendezvous at the shady Frisky Puss Hotel. Thinking the letter was intended for his coworker, the gigolo Tournel, Victor sends Tournel off to make the rendezvous in his place. And after that...Ives' adaptation maintains the original's dazzling plot while communicating Feydeau's playful use of language to an American audience.

  • Beginners Improv
Beginners Improv will introduce students to the wonderful unscripted world of playing pretend with other adults. This class will introduce students to the foundations of improv, including the basics of creating that very first scene. Throughout these six weeks, students will learn object work, back-and-forth improv, and the lost art of listening.  The course will introduce students to games and experiences designed to let creativity flow freely and foster a dynamic and collaborative environment.
No experience necessary! Come ready to play!

    Advanced Improv
Advanced Improv will give more experienced students the opportunity to enhance their object work, scene work, and scene creation abilities.
This course will build upon the skills and techniques learned in Beginner's Improv and explore character development. Students will learn how to bring their improv characters to life and experiment with physical comedy.
    Previous improv experience necessary!

  • Long Form Improv
Long Form Improv will give experienced students the opportunity to explore a method of improv where a group of performers take one suggestion and create a theatrical piece inspired by that proposed idea.  Students will build upon the skills and techniques learned in Advanced Improv and what it means to create a piece by ensemble. Warm-Ups, Ice Breaker Games, and the structure of the class will all focus on team work to prepare students for the long haul of Long Form. The most popular and common forms will be studied during this program.
    Previous improv experience necessary!

  •
  • ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR!

  • Paul Fruhwirth

  •
  • Paul was first bitten by the acting bug when he was only two months old. Once he recovered from the infection, he landed his first starring role as Baby Jesus in his neighborhood holiday pageant at only four months old. Later in life, Paul went on to have a love for the theatre, comedy, improv, sketch writing, and stand-up comedy. Beginning in 2012, Paul pursued a formalized education at The Second City Training Center in Old Town, a small neighborhood in the city of Chicago. Paul graduated from The Second City's Improv Program, the sketch comedy program, the stand-up comedy program, as well as the Writing for Late Night TV program.

While Paul's first passion is the stage, he has learned to expand that love into corporate America. In order to pay for his addiction to gummy bears and in-app purchases, Paul spends his days facilitating training sessions, sales presentations and traveling across the country on the speaking circuit.

Paul has appeared at Zany's Chicago, The Laugh Factory Chicago, The Second City Etc. Stage, and his sketches have appeared in The Second City's Skybox Theater. His mother is an Instructor of Performing Arts in Chicago, and specifically asked to be included in his biography. Paul's cat, "Melrose Place" or "Melly" for short, does not find him funny in the least.
