Burlington's Got Brains: Census Update
The final 2016 Census Update was released at the end of November and includes education, labour, journey to work, language of work, and mobility and migration highlights. Some key insights from this release include:  
  • The population of Burlington is well-educated with 73% of residents having post-secondary education, which is above the Ontario average of 65%. 
  • Almost half (42%) of Burlington residents work in Burlington while another 18% work in other parts of Halton Region.
  • Burlington has an unemployment rate of 5.6%, which is below the provincial average of 7.5%

Welcome to TechPlace, Orfer! 
BEDC has signed a soft landing agreement with leading Finnish robotics  company Orfer. This agreement leverages  the resources of TechPlace and BEDC to support Orfer as they begin the process of establishing a North American headquarters. Read more a bout this exciting new company  here.

Burlington's Population is Growing
In late October the 2016 Census data was released on Immigration, Ethnocultural Diversity, Housing, and Aboriginal Peoples. Read the full summary online here. A few key takeaways include:
  • Burlington grew by 7,535 people between 2011 and 2016 with 75% of this growth coming from immigrants. 
  • In Burlington, there are 71,375 private households. Of this, 76% own and 24% rent. Home ownership in Burlington is higher than in Ontario.
  • Burlington's median housing prices are lower than those in Oakville and Halton Region, comparable to those in Milton, and below the median prices for Ontario and Canada.

Burlington startup WayPay was nominated for FinTech Startup Of The Year at the 3rd Annual Canadian FinTech & AI Awards! This event took place on November 27th and honoured leading Canadian fintech companies. Burlington based WayPay received a nomination for FinTech Startup Of the Year. Although they didn't win, this nomination concludes an exciting year for the WayPay team. They joined 500 Startups back in July and were recently recognized by The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) as an innovator in Canadian and global payments game.  Learn more about WayPay here
City-wide Parking Standards Review
The City of Burlington is looking for feedback about proposed new parking standards from residents, business owners and developers. To help ensure the city's parking requirements accurately reflect current demand and emerging trends in transportation, the parking standards are being reviewed and updated. The new parking standards will help ensure the right number of parking spaces are required for each land use. The review will also consider the design of parking spaces, taking into account new technology such as electric car lifts. Read more and have your say online here.
