CCSD93 Students Learn Graphic Design & Web Development with CCIA
|
|
We know that careers in web and graphic design will continue to rise into the future, so to expose our students to the tools, skills, and ways of thinking required to be tomorrow's graphic designers and web developers, CCSD93's middle schoolers take Creative Communication & Innovative Arts (CCIA) class. Sixth grade students learn the basics of digital design, 7th graders learn digital animation, and 8th graders learn web development.

They learn with the very same tools used by professionals, including HTML and CSS coding, and Adobe products like PhotoShop, InDesign and After Effects. CCIA epitomizes personalized learning, as students work at their own pace, choose from different projects to take on, collaborate with and help one another, and are challenged to use problem-solving skills to complete their projects.
Each 6th grader takes CCIA as one of their five related arts classes, and then 7th and 8th graders are able to choose to take it as one of their three related arts classes. I was asked to write an article about the steps CCSD93 has taken to provide a more personalized learning environment for students for
eSchool News, a daily educational technology newsletter. The target audience was other educators and leaders of school systems, and it gained some traction, landing on
SmartBrief's "Most Read by Educators" list.
In short, the steps described are as follows:
- Define personalized education for all stakeholders
- Align your mission, vision, and strategic plan to personalization
- Provide comprehensive professional development
- Build relationships
- It's not all about technology, but embracing it can empower students
- Find great partners

Mrs. Orrock to be Remembered at Annual Glow Walk in Carol Stream on 9/29
|
Lisa Orrock was a teacher at Carol Stream School and member of the CCSD93 family who we tragically lost far too soon during the summer of 2015 to pulmonary hypertension. To honor her memory and to raise funds for improved treatments, many CCSD93 staff members will be participating in the Annual Glow Walk, hosted by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association! You're invited to make donations here, and if you'd like to come cheer on the team, here are the details of the event.

50 Men Who Cook & Divas Who Dish Recap
|
On Saturday, the Bloomingdale Chamber of Commerce hosted 50 Men Who Cook & Divas Who Dish at Stratford Square Mall. It was a wonderful community event where prominent men and women from our local communities put their cooking skills on display to raise money for schools, including Stratford Middle School and the CCSD93 Early Childhood Center.
Thank you to everyone who came out! A great time was had by all as Stratford Principal Patrick Dawson served up some tasty guacamole while former CCSD93 Board Member Dick Boyer and his wife Rose dished out delicious homemade ice cream. There were many additional event volunteers from CCSD93 who attended, and I also thank them very much!

9/27 Board of Education Meeting Preview

The next CCSD93 Board of Education meeting will be held Thursday, September 27 at 7 p.m. at CCSD93's District Office, 230 Covington Drive in Bloomingdale. All community members are invited to attend. The following items are on the agenda.

CCSD93 Board President Keith Briggs Speaks Out for Public Schools to U.S. Legislators

Before I conclude, I want to share with you that recently CCSD93 School Board President Keith Briggs and I had the opportunity to attend a FED ED luncheon that brought together local education leaders with U.S. Congresspeople. While many were invited, Representatives
Robin Kelly, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Mike Quigley, and Jan Schakowski were on hand.
During an open discussion, Mr. Briggs was able to share his frustration with the way that the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) is being implemented in Illinois. He described the unfair labeling, sorting, and outdated overreliance on standardized assessments that is being used to describe, evaluate, and define school districts as part of ESSA. I was extremely proud of how he described the great things our students are accomplishing everyday, how our terrific educators are constantly engaging and challenging students in unique and relevant ways and ultimately making CCSD93 an outstanding school district for teaching and learning.
Mr. Briggs spoke from his heart and described himself to the Congresspeople as a community member, parent, and Board member. They went out of their way to thank him for his words and for helping them to understand the pitfalls of ESSA. There's so much more that goes into what makes a high quality school district than what ESSA measures. Please keep an eye out for more information from CCSD93 about what's included in ESSA and what's left out in the near future.
