The Aging Report
Healthy Aging Programs
Change Lives
September is Healthy Aging Month where we explore the many ways in which we can maintain our health and happiness and lead fulfilling lives.

Healthy Aging is more than just maintaining your physical heath. It is about mental, social, and financial health too. It's never too late to find a new career, new sport, passion or hobby.

The Agency on Aging Northeastern Illinois offers a suite of programs designed to help people manage their symptoms, improve their quality of life and reduce costs. Within the Take Charge of your Health suite, a specialized program focusing on diabetes and a Spanish version of Take Charge of Your Health are included.
Take Charge Of Your Health

These workshops enable older adults to manage their chronic health problems. They also help develop the individual’s skills in communicating and collaborating with health care professionals to improve health outcomes. Studies show that participants reported improved health, proper use of medications, and better ability to communicate with health providers.
Fit&Strong!

This class is a multiple component exercise program designed to help seniors with stiffness and pain to be more active and confident in their daily lives, and allows them to live a more active lifestyle. The class provides physical activity training and health education for older adults with lower extremity Osteoarthritis.
A Matter of Balance (MOB)

This program teaches older adults how to reduce fall risks and eases their fear of falling, improves falls self -management, increases self-confidence, and promotes physical activity. It also helps eliminate the isolation and depression fear of falling causes.

With 5 offices in three counties, the programs offered at each location may vary, however, the popularity of these classes and their attendance numbers have only increased over the years. In fact, in several offices, their participants attend multiple healthy aging classes and continue what they have learned in these programs in their daily life while building friendships that last a lifetime. The partnership between staff and volunteer trainers who are passionate about what they do has also added to the success of these programs in their counties.

Have You Received Your New Medicare Card?
All Medicare beneficiaries are getting new Medicare cards and most enrollees in Illinois have already received theirs. The new cards have a “Medicare Beneficiary Identifier,” or MBI, an identifier that replaces the number based on their Social Security number. The MBI is unique to one person and reduces the risk of identity theft and other forms of fraud.

Illinois residents can check their MyMedicare.gov account to see if their new card was mailed.
Beneficiaries in Illinois who have not yet received a new card can call 1-800-MEDICARE to see if they need to update a mailing address or other information. Beneficiaries should take the new card to all medical appointments, so they can be bill correctly. All old Medicare cards should be destroyed.

Medicare and Social Security administrators warn enrollees to beware of possible scams. There is never a charge for the new Medicare card, no anonymous caller can expedite the process, and Medicare nor Social Security will ever call you to seek information. Anyone who receives such a call should hang up; if it happens again, it should be reported to 1-800-MEDICARE [1-800-633-4227], or to the Senior Medicare Patrol for Illinois at Age Options, (800) 699-9043.

Dementia Friendly Memory Café
We wanted to correct the information about the organizations involved in the first ever Memory Cafe in Kankakee from last months newsletter.

The first Memory Café in Kankakee was held in May at the Manteno Fire Department.

We would like to thank University of Illinois Extension Office, Riverside Senior Life Communities, Bourbonnais Township Park District, Manteno Fire Station, Chief O’Brien, Manteno Police, as well as a Wal-Mart and other nurseries for their generous time and donations! These organizations are invested in creating a Dementia Friendly Community for those they serve.
A Memory Cafe is a social connection in the community to allow individuals with Dementia to have a positive quality of life and their family to stay connected with positive, engaging activities with their loved one!
