FAR-Supported Summer Camp Encourages Children's Interest in Science
Sun observations and planet gazes were the must-do activities at Byurakan Science Camp this year. The summer camp held at Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory hosted 50 children (aged 9 to 14). FAR has supported the camp for five years. It enables children to combine study and leisure, art and science through different mediums. On one day, campers may hear lectures about astrophysics and civil rights. On another day, they may visit churches and castles, draw pictures or make videos.
"We hope that the days spent here and the knowledge we deliver will encourage children to be interested in astronomy, or at least in science," said Camp Coordinator Sona Farmanyan. To learn more, go to:

A Prayer for Armenia's Independence
Today - Friday, September 21-marks the 27th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Armenia. The rebirth of the Armenian homeland is one of the most momentous developments in the history of the Armenian people. Armenia's citizens voted for independence from the Soviet Union on September 21, 1991, and the resulting free republic became a member of the United Nations on March 2, 1992.
Armenians encountered the powerful spirit of those days again this year, when the courage and determination of our fellow countrymen in the homeland became an example to Armenians all over the world-including here in America.
On Sunday, September 23, parishes of the Eastern Diocese will conduct the "Thanksgiving Prayer of the Republic of Armenia."

following the Divine
Liturgy

The Armenian Apostolic Church
celebrates the Feast of the Exaltation
of the Holy Cross
(Khachverats in Armenian) on the
Sunday nearest to September 15.
It is one of the five major feasts of the Armenian Church, and the most important of the four feasts of
the Holy Cross. According to the tradition, the first one to "exalt" the Cross was the Apostle
James of Jerusalem, also known as the "Brother of the Lord."
After the Badarak an Antasdan service (blessing of the fields) was celebrated during which the processional
cross adorned with basil (a symbol of royalty) was carried and the four corners of the
church were blessed as a sign of the sanctification of the world. This sweet-smelling plant is associated
with the celebration of this feast because in the early decades of Christianity, basil was a symbol of royalty,
befitting the Savior who was crucified as a King.
Church traditions also recall a beautiful story of the miraculous growth of basil on the ground at the foot
of the Cross of the Lord after it had been removed. Basil, according to pious traditions, continued to
grow on that ground despite the faithful cutting and taking it home.

First Day of Shnorhali School 2018-2019
The Shnorhali Armenian School opened its doors for the academic year 2018-2019 on September 9, with classes in Armenian language and culture and Christian education taught to K-12 students. This year the School offers an Eastern Armenian language and Cultural heritage curriculum to seven grade levels, as well as one Western Armenian class. The Christian education curriculum is extended to include post graduate/high school levels. The Eastern Armenian classes for adults, the school started last year, will be taught this year as well.
As the registration process hasn't been completed the Shnorhali School would like to request parents' cooperation in timely registration of students.

"Armenia!" Exhibit Opening this Week at the Metropolitan Museum of Art
After months of eager anticipation, the splendid "Armenia!" exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will finally open to the public on Saturday, September 22, beginning its run through January 13, 2019. This major exhibition features rare works of Armenian art from around the world-many of them never before displayed in the United States.
His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, is traveling to New York to preside over the opening reception for the exhibit on September 24. (While there are no public gatherings scheduled for Catholicos Karekin II's brief time in the city, he will be present at the United Nations General Assembly for the speech of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.)
Since the exhibit's inception, the Eastern Diocese and Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan have taken active roles in the realization of "Armenia!" One of the exceptional items on display will be the 17th-century Voskan Bible that the Diocese is lending to the Met for this special occasion. Fr. Findikyan has contributed a scholarly essay to the magnificent exhibit catalogue, and blessed the exhibit during the "press preview" on September 20 (

Exhibit curator Dr. Helen Evans (the Met's Mary and Michael Jaharis Curator of Byzantine Art, and a longtime friend of the Diocese) has brought together exquisite works covering 14 centuries of Armenian history: from the 4th through 17th centuries.
"This is the first major exhibition to explore the remarkable artistic and cultural achievements of the Armenian people in a global context," Dr. Evans explained. Watch her overview of the exhibit in a short video on the Metropolitan Museum's website by clicking here.

Days of Disaster, Days of Prayer
In a directive last week, Diocesan Primate Fr. Daniel Findikyan urged parishioners to offer prayers for the victims of Hurricane Florence, and for residents of the towns in Massachusetts where dozens of homes were destroyed in gas-leak explosions.
In particular, he asked the faithful to pray for the St. Sarkis Church of Charlotte, NC, and the mission parish in Atlanta, GA, both of which lie within the outer orbit of the hurricane; and for the Hye Pointe Church of Bradford, MA, which is nearby Andover and Lawrence, where the explosions occurred.
The Primate said that the church pastors, Rev. Fr. Samuel Rith-Najarian and the Rev. Fr. Vart Gyozalyan, had reported that their people and churches were spared from the worst effects of the disasters, and that they were reaching out to those in need of assistance.
"Pray, too, for all our fellow citizens who are in distress due to these calamities," urged the Primate. "May our Lord Jesus Christ be with everyone affected by these days of disaster. May He attend to our fervent prayers, and draw His holy light out of the darkness. And may He strengthen our resolve to help with relief efforts when the storm and turmoil have passed."

Hearts Connect on a Visit to FAR's Vanadzor Home
Members of the Fuller Center for Housing (FCHA) visited the Fund for Armenian Relief's Vanadzor Old Age Home (VOAH) during their recent trip to Armenia. FAR board member Fr. Yeprem Kelegian led the group.
Dr. Lisa Armaganian, a cardiologist from Racine, WI, didn't know what to expect from her visit to the home, on her first trip of Armenia. She didn't hesitate to interact with residents, however, and asked them about their lives and daily activities. "I think this is a wonderful place for these people," she said. "Everyone we have talked to feels so happy about being here. They love the staff and everybody said they felt as if VOAH was their family."
Dr. Armaganian went on: "I had heard about the Fund for Armenian Relief in the U.S., but I never really understood what they did. Now I see what they are doing for these people, and I feel that I want to give more."
Fr. Kelegian concurred. "The joy and the warmth I witnessed at the old age home is vivid in my mind," he said. "Thank you to FAR for its presence and dedicated work."
