Media Minutes
By Ms. Sharon Powers, LNMS Media Specialist

Each January the Florida Department of Education designates a week as Celebrate Literacy week throughout the entire state.  This year the dates are January 28 through February 1st. Here at LNMS, we have planned a  variety of activities.  We also have daily dress themes:
  • Monday - Read Around the World.  Students can wear shirts which represent their native countries.
  • Tuesday - Reading Rocks with Crazy Socks!
  • Wednesday - REaDing is Awesome!  Students should wear a red shirt.
  • Thursday - Reading Makes Us Winners!  Students should wear their favorite team shirt or jersey.
  • Friday - Reading Feeds our Spirit. Wear LNMS attire or black & gold.

During the week, the following activities will be ongoing:

* Any student who checks out a book during the week will be entered into a drawing for prizes and will be able to add their name to a display.  We hope to cover our circulation desk and then some!

* A door decorating contest for classroom doors will take place through 1st period classes.  Ask your student if their teacher is participating!  Prizes will go out to the the top 3 doors.

* A bookmark contest for our budding artists. Students can obtain a blank bookmark from the media center and decorate it with anything related to literacy, books, or reading. There will be prizes for the best 3 designs.

* Do you know how many books we have in the LNMS media center? Take a guess!  Closest one is the winner! Students can enter their guess in the jar on the circulation desk.

* If administration or any of our resource team finds a student reading (not including classrooms and the media center, of course), they will give them a "Caught Ya Reading" ticket.  Tickets can be redeemed in the media center for a goodie from the prize counter.

* Book trailers will be shown during first period classes.

Additionally, we will celebrate our SSYRA Reward Card holders. Any student with an SSYRA card should see Ms. Powers during that week to receive a special item. Our students who have read 5 or more of the books will be invited to attend a Panera Bread catered breakfast on Monday morning at 9:00 a.m. Eligible students will receive an invitation this week.

AND . . . on Monday and Wednesday we will host Book Bingo and Book Trivia in the media center during lunches. Students can enjoy their lunches while having some book fun. There will be prizes awarded as well. Interested students should see Ms. Powers this week to sign up ahead of time and receive their pass for the event.

We hope your student participates in at least one of the Celebrate Literacy Week activities!
