A group of over 100 medical, allied healthcare, and engineering students, alongside various community partners, have come together to source Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) through PPE redistribution, production (sewing and 3D printing), and fundraising. More than $5,000 has been raised which has allowed for the collection and distribution of 139 requests for PPE from across Northern Ontario, shipping to communities as far south as Port Perry and as north as Bearskin Lake. Health Care Provider Spotlight:
Lisa Bishop, Registered Midwife with Dilico Anishinabek Family Care
Lisa Bishop is a dedicated Midwife who breaks down health and societal barriers to provide care to those in need in the way that they need it most. She leads the Indigenous Midwifery Program for Dilico Anishinabek Family Care, a program designed to support Anishinabek mothers and families who have complex social backgrounds or are dealing with substance abuse.
Lisa is Anishinaabe from Wikwemikong Unceded Territory on Manitoulin Island. She completed a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery at Laurentian University and Masters of Public Health at Lakehead University. She has practiced as a Registered Midwife since 2007, working in Peterborough with Kawartha Community Midwives and in Thunder Bay, with the Maternity Care Midwives before joining Dilico in 2017.
“While I returned to the Northwest to be closer to family, Thunder Bay gives me the opportunity to work with Indigenous clients in the city from First Nations across Northwestern Ontario,” says Lisa. “There is much more work than our program can do on its own; Indigenous midwifery has lots of room to grow across the region. It's exciting to be at the forefront of bringing midwifery back to our way of life."
The mothers that Lisa cares for face significant health and societal barriers. They often suffer from substance misuse, are victims of sexual assault, and are under-housed or homeless. Due to these challenges, many encounter stigma when trying to access care. Lisa knows that it is important to see the client where it is most comfortable for them and will provide care in their housing, shelters, or wherever they may be. Dilico’s recent addition of a mobile ultrasound allows Lisa to bring ultrasound services to clients, which are otherwise challenging to access. Lisa works closely with Dr. Naana Jumah , OB/GYN at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, who specializes in substance abuse and neonatal care. Together, they work collaboratively to support Indigenous mothers, children, and families.
"Midwives often consider themselves guardians of low-risk, normal pregnancy and birth. I believe all pregnant people can benefit from having midwifery support to achieve a safe and health pregnancy. My work allows me to have clients with diverse social and medical backgrounds; clients who typically wouldn't see a midwife and face many structural barriers to health care. The most rewarding part of my work is being able to connect with clients, remove some of those barriers and ensure they have adequate prenatal care."
In 2020, the program expanded to include an Indigenous Midwife Apprentice. This model will eventually grow to rematriate midwifery care back into all of the Anishinabek communities within the Robinson Superior Treaty Area.
Lisa is a wonderful caregiver, deeply connecting with clients and working outside her scope of practice to ensure those facing significant personal issues find supports for food, shelter, safety, and wellbeing. She was recently honored by the Association of Ontario Midwives with the Elsie Cressman Award for Innovative Midwifery Practices.
