At Liberty, we are continually grateful for our members, who not only bring smiles to our faces each day, but have allowed us the opportunity to celebrate our 45th year in business. With members like you, we have been able to provide an environment that fosters health and wellness throughout our local community. Please know that you are always appreciated and we thank you for allowing us to serve you.

Congratulations gentlemen!  Captain Seth Kornfeld, co-capta in JP Lammers, co-captain Jon Houston, Justin Sweet, Kiran Bandiatmakur, Bill Bowman, John Sperendi, Anil Singal, David Bradford, Dylan Barrell, Chris McMeeking, and Joey Mullick represented Liberty's Adult 18 & Over 3.0 team in the USTA Nationals, in Las Vegas, NV, October 12-14.   Ranging in age from 29-60, Liberty's team finished 10 th out of 433 teams!

Captain Seth Kornfeld helped put together the nucleus of this successful team , when he moved from Pennsylvania to Ann Arbor, in January 2016.  "Living a quarter mile from Liberty," Seth explained, "I joined Liberty , on a whim, just two days after I arrived in town.  Before I left the club, a Liberty employee shared that I should try Marty Maehr's tennis clinic that Saturday."

At the end of Marty's clinic, Seth was paired to play with Joey Mullick.  When they finished, they were asked by tennis enthusiast Kusull Kim to join a USTA 6.0 mixed doubles team that she was forming.   "Joey agreed to play," Seth shared, "and while I'd never been a fan of playing mixed doubles, I found myself inexplicably saying 'yes,' too!"

The formation of the mixed doubles team spearheaded the formation of the men's 3.0 team.  Seth and Joey were serious about the task at hand.  They were also competitive players and chose their team members, accordingly.

The road to nationals, for this high achieving tea m, began the beginning of June.   T hey defeated Huron Valley to win their flight; Ann Arbor Rec and Ed and Troy, to win districts; West Hills Athletic Club to win states; and Indiana and Illinois to win sectionals.   At nationals , they defeated Minnesota and Texas, and lost to Florida and Caribbean , the eventual winner.

The majority of their competitions were extremely close, with many being decided by the final match.  "We defeated Huron Valley to win our local flight in electric fashion," Seth exclaimed.

Before the match against again Huron Valley, Seth learned that one of his doubles players would not be able to make it.  In hopes of putting the team in its most competitive position, Seth forfeited the #2 singles court and placed that player on the #2 doubles team.

Beginning the match down 1-0, Liberty needed to win three out of the four remaining courts.  Tied at 2-2, Liberty's #1 doubles team won the deciding match, in a thriller, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 10-5 , in a super tiebreaker!

Liberty's victory over West Hills Athletic Club, to win the state championship, also concluded in a tight match.  This time, the #3 doubles team closed out a victory 6-4, 3-6(8) , in another super tiebreaker.

Winning s ectionals required a little luck and a devoted team effort.   During this competition, Kiran's wife was expecting a baby at any moment.  As a result , he left Ann Arbor at 3 a.m. and drove four hours to Indianapolis, to play his match.  After procuring a victory for his team, in a tiebreaker, he drove home.

T he overall competition was so close , the winning team was not decided until the final matches.  Liberty needed to defeat Ohio , and the Indiana versus Illinois match needed to end in a 3-2 decision, either way.   Both occurred, but when the final scores were tallied, i t was an injury retirement by an opponent in an earlier match, that sealed their victory.

As any sports team will attest, it takes more than athleticism to insure a victory.  The support of family and fans, team chemistry, and a little luck are also needed. Liberty Athletic Club provided monetary assistance and its tennis pros shared beneficial coaching.

"The support of our fans," Seth emphasized, "was great, and our team really appreciated it."  "Their enthusiasm was passionate and a bit intimidating, which gave us a real home court advantage!"

Last, and certainly not least, this team possessed great chemistry both on and off the court.  While its members approached their matches seriously and competitively, at night, they enjoyed partying together.  "My advice to any USTA team," Seth proclaimed, "is that all roads to nationals begin with a fireball shot!"

According to the United States Tennis Association (USTA), "USTA League is the country's largest recreational tennis league with more than 300,000 tennis players nationwide, competing on teams, while meeting new people and getting physically fit."

If you enjoy tennis and want to stay active, improve your game, have fun, and make new friends, join a USTA team.  ( marybeth.putnam@libertyathletic.net)

Eggs
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist

In the past, eggs have gotten a bad rap due to the their cholesterol content; but it's really the amount of fat in our diets that tend to influence cholesterol levels, not necessarily the cholesterol in what we eat.*

When it comes to protein, eggs are considered the gold standard, meaning they contain the highest biological protein value. (Biological protein value refers to how efficient we can utilize protein in our diets.)

Other nutrients, like the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, may play a role in reducing macular degeneration, and lutein and choline are believed to enhance brain development.

There's lots of questions though, about which eggs are best; white, brown, organic, cage free, range free, or pasture raised.
  • The particular breed of hen determines what color their eggs are. There is no nutritional difference between different white, brown, green, or blue eggs.
  • According to USDA standards, organic eggs comes from hens who consume organic feed. To date, there is no scientific evidence that they are nutritionally better than any other kind of egg.
  • Cage free is basically defined by the USDA as having a certain amount of space plus access to the outside. This doesn't necessarily mean the hens actually get out to forage for food. Because of this, it's unclear what their total diet might be. They are typically fed a soy or corn diet.
  • Range free hens have more space than cage free birds but this still doesn't mean they are outside all that much and many are fed only a soy or corn diet.
  • Pasture raised hens are either outside all day and called in at night or 24/7. They peck at worms, bugs, and plants. Their diets may be supplemented with corn or soy.
Pasture raised hens may have more omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, and beta-carotene in their eggs (dark orange yolks), but it really depends on what they're eating. Eggs have a host of nutritional benefits, regardless of the variety you choose.

One large whole egg contains about 6 grams of protein, 72 calories and 5 grams of fat plus iron, vitamins, and minerals.

*Some research indicates consuming 7 eggs/week may negatively impact heart disease for people with diabetes
