HAPPY FISHING EVERYONE!
In the Gospel reading for this Sunday (Luke 5:1-11), Peter the fisherman encounters Jesus for the first time. In this meeting Peter gets caught. Like all of us, he gets caught in the net that is Jesus Christ, caught like so many fish Peter himself has pulled out of the Sea of Galilee.

After a day of futile fishing, Peter follows the direction of Jesus to drop his nets, does so, and catches the largest catch of his life, the largest catch any of them had ever seen. It was a miracle.

In that moment, Peter recognizes two things. One, Jesus is Lord and he is from God. Two, that he is unworthy to be in his presence. “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” he says. Jesus responds, “Don’t be afraid, from now on you will be catching people.”

This is the simple but amazing story of our faith. Happy fishing everyone!

IT WAS IN-TENTS
-By Jenn Herron
On Saturday, Feb 2nd, TLC was open all night long and full of energy with over 25 7th-10th graders hanging out together for an overnight lock-in. The lock-in was scheduled in conjunction with Camp Sunday with the intention for the kids to participate in the 8:15 service before going home to sleep. Another major component was the community mission of making and serving an egg bake to members of the congregation after Sunday services.

The event began at 7pm Saturday night with a campfire greeting outside of the main doors where the youth gathered to make s’mores before walking through a narthex full of tents and playing a large group game of dodge ball in Fellowship Hall. The fun continued in the lower level Youth Room with Wii games, pool, Foosball, and the ever popular makeovers. No one went hungry because pizza was delivered at 11pm and the snack table was filled every 2 hours. Movies were played in a ‘mellow room’ downstairs where some kids took a brief nap; however, the energy was not low during a game of Sardines (reverse Hide and Seek) played throughout the church in the dark with headlamps and flashlights. By the time clean-up and breakfast came around at 7am, the kids were awake but not fully functioning, so the 8:15 service was entertaining.

A special shout out to the adult leaders who showed up to help throughout the night and early morning. Thank you Ben, Evan, Carol, Allison, Cari, Jen, Karla, Patty and Jenn- your presence is greatly appreciated! We look forward to another successful lock-in next winter!

A “Many-faceted” Service Last Sunday!

How many times do you get to see a full-sized canoe get carried up the center aisle? Maybe a third carrier was needed....canoes are so long! Also, how often might you see Pastor Arthur giving a Yoga 101 lesson? “Remain flexible, people....find your 'edge' and go for it.” Most of us don't even try to touch our toes, breathe through the exercise, learn something new! The theme for worship was Love embodied in Christ; in fact the words 'Christ' and 'love' can mean the same thing! This time of year when winter will seem to last forever is a good time to try something new, be inspired!

Just now I saw a wonderful variety of birds...some dainty, others quite large, feasting at our feeders and even drinking from the heated birdbath. The birds of the air are mentioned in the Bible as a lesson on how much God loves us. If these tiny creatures know how to care for themselves, and to sometimes rely on humans, who made that possible? I remember being impressed as a youngster, when a verse would say “Even your hairs are numbered.” Then my mind would wander and I'd think 'hares' instead....a funny mental picture during a long sermon.

This year is very good for bird-watching, and also thinking of how God loves them while you watch. A northern flicker, a red-breasted nuthatch, a fat bluejay, some chickadees going back and forth to eat one seed at a time, and then the squirrels on the ground of course. God loves them too, and we need to be patient while they clean up the spilled seed but then leap up to clean up the feeders or knock some more seed down to their level. Room for all God's creatures, isn't there? Enjoy what we have been given!

THE ORIGIN OF VALENTINE'S DAY?
Falling for the Jailer's Daughter
The history is somewhat murky as to how Valentine's Day has come to be what we now know and celebrate. Saint Valentine served in third-century Rome. Emperor Claudius decided that single men made better soldiers. Therefore, Claudius banned soldiers from being married. One version of the story is that Valentine continued to perform the weddings of young soldiers who were in love, and Emperor Claudius had Valentine imprisoned. While imprisoned, Valentine reportedly fell in love with the jailer's daughter. Valentine sent her a card and signed it, "Love, your Valentine." Another version is that Valentine defied Claudius by helping Christians escape the torture of the Romans. Still others claim the church may have decided to celebrate in mid-February to "Christianize" the pagan Roman celebration Lupercalia.

Valentine died in approximately A.D. 270.

The first Valentine greeting sent in the United States was in the 1840's by Esther Howgald. Most of us enjoy "spoiling" a loved one on Valentine's Day. Sending gifts and cards conveys love, affection, and friendship.

Listening Session Update
Meet with the Pastoral Leadership Team & the Church Council

After receiving feedback, the Pastoral Leadership Team and the Church Council is revising the schedule for our Listening Sessions regarding the Co-Pastor Proposal to allow for a greater range of participation. The sessions will be:

  • Sunday, Feb. 17: 12pm – 1:30pm - Fellowship Hall
  • Wednesday, Feb. 20: 7pm – 8:30pm - Conference Room
  • Sunday, Feb. 24: 9am – 11am - Conference Room

The purpose of the listening sessions is for representatives from the Council and the Pastoral Leadership Team to gather questions and input from the congregation. Our intent is to be open to the hearts and minds of our church family. Your feedback will be reviewed when making further determination about the proposal.

The sessions are intended to be a drop-in format around worship services, not to compete with worship. Members of the Council and the Pastoral Leadership Team will be present during these times. Please stop by at your preference within these hours if you wish to provide feedback. ( Location may vary by day and will be announced each day.) If you prefer, we welcome your concerns by email. Please send emails to Carol Hill at carol2002jean@gmail.com .
From Ann and Dennis Gettis:
"Jeremiah’s Hope for Kindness" was created in honor of our precious son, Jeremiah, who took his life on October 22, 2006 at the age of 21. In a letter to us he wrote that he no longer wanted to live in a “world where people are so cruel.” In another letter he wrote about being bullied. He wrote that the bullying he endured left him “with no self esteem and feeling like a loser.” We are dedicated to changing the world Jeremiah described as so cruel by creating kind and caring schools and communities so that every child feels valued and cared about. It is our mission to support efforts and be a resource for fostering kind and respectful homes, schools and communities.

Wednesday evening, February 27 at 7pm in Fellowship Hall, Jeremiah's mother, Ann Gettis, shares her story and what she has learned about bullying and its impact. She will offer stategies for addressing and preventing bullying, and fostering kindness and well-being.

“What Guys Really Want” features true, heartfelt stories of masculinity told from the male perspective and portrayed through a series of gripping vignettes. The narrow definition of masculinity in our society creates a tremendous challenge for boys and men to be their true, authentic selves. Boys and men are inundated with negative messages from the media, movies, music, peers and family, as to how they should act and behave. Often these expectations contradict their true feelings. This production raises awareness and creates a conversation about how masculinity is shaped and formed amongst boys and men — too often in an unhealthy way — and how we as a community can change that. As with all productions, Chain Reaction Theatre Project is partnering with local social services organizations to spark discussion and inspire community action around the issues central to the play.
