"I suppose some would be shocked at our seeming worldliness and levity. But just underneath there is a deadly earnestness. Faith has to work twenty-four hours a day in and through us, or we perish.

Most of us feel we need look no further for Utopia. We have it with us right here and now."

Step Eight:
Made a list of all persons we had harmed and became willing to make amends to them all.
(Spiritual Principle: Self-discipline)

"Clearly if we were going to remain abstinent and find serenity, we had to learn better ways of dealing with other people, ways that would bring us joy instead of pain...In Step Eight, we look at our relationships for the purpose of discovering those patterns that have done harm to us and others. Here, we meet guild head-on and get rid of it. We learn about the healing power of forgiveness as we discover how to forgive ourselves and others. Most important, we begin to becoming willing to make amends -- that is, to make changes -- in the way we deal with the people who share our lives."

"As much as we might like to, we cannot skip the making of amends if we want freedom from compulsive eating. The experience of OA members who have worked the Steps before us shows that recovery depends on completing Steps Eight and Nine."

Tradition Eight:
Overeaters Anonymous should remain forever nonprofessional, but our service centers may employ special workers.
(Spiritual Principal: Fellowship)

"The tradition of nonprofessionalism helps OA steer clear of the profit motive and concentrate on offering Twelve Step recovery to all who seek it...None of us are paid to be here. Each of us is a compulsive eater, and we all come seeking support for our own personal recovery. Knowing this, we can trust each other to speak from the heart, to share what our experience has taught us, and to listen compassionately to our fellow members."

"Since there are no professional OA members, we all have an equal opportunity to serve our fellow compulsive eater. We don't need certification, education, or credentials to share our program or to do service. All we need is willingness and a commitment to the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of OA."

"When services demand special skills, professionals are hired for their expertise or advice... Our experience has shown that some paid employees are necessary to take care of the business of OA...The vast good OA does for suffering compulsive eaters worldwide is still, for the most part, done nonprofessionally by OA members who give back they are so generously given. This spirit of caring and sharing is one of the greatest strengths we have to offer as a Fellowship, for it carries with it a true healing power."
