The Conclusion: PART III: Sister City Partnership Revitalized
This is the last part of the three-part series recapturing the recent visit of the six-person delegation from Missoula's sister city Palmerston North in New Zealand, October 8th through October 16th. During their stay in the Garden City, the delegation had a full schedule visiting with Mayor John Engen, the Executive Director of the Downtown Missoula Partnership, the UM president and various campus administrators, toured Missoula College, the Clark Fork Coalition, the Missoula Children's Theater, the Missoula Art Museum, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
A day trip to Helena gave the delegation an opportunity to see our beautiful landscape in radiant fall colors, with a visit to the Governor's Office, a tour of the Capitol Building and meetings with representatives from the MT Department of Commerce, Export Montana, as well as a meeting with members of the Offices of International and Domestic Tourism. A second field trip to the Salish Kootenai College connected the Māori representatives to their indigenous relatives, followed by a visit of UM's Biological Station at Flathead Lake.
Mayor Engen had proclaimed October 13th, 14th and 15th as New Zealand Days and what better way to celebrate the sister city connection than with the annual Tubby Thompson Rugby Match at the Fort Missoula Maggot Field, where the delegation members performed a traditional Haka, a type of ancient
 Māori war dance, traditionally used on the battlefield, as well as when groups came together in peace, before the rugby kick-off. On their last day, the visitors had the opportunity to explore the scenic Bitterroot Valley with a trip to Hamilton, including a photo opportunity with bison roaming on Bitterroot Bison Company land. On their last evening, the Palmerston North group was "warming-up" the patrons at the Roxy Theater, who came to watch Hip-Hop-Eration, a New Zealand film, part of the new World View Film Series.
The farewell activities included the signing of the 2018  Strategic Sister City Partnership Memorandum, pledging a rejuvenation of the partnership between the two cities, by identifying economic opportunities for
development and collaboration. "This sister city
connection is not just a document, it is strategic, creative plan and collaboration with goals that will benefit young and old communities in both cities. On a scale from 0-10, 10 being the best possible outcome of an international visit, the result was off the charts", Udo Fluck, Director of Global and Cultural Affairs. Year Without a Summer, Art Erupts: From Missoula to the World // Virtual Gallery Opening with Courtney Blazon

Udo Fluck, Director of Global & Cultural Affairs at Arts Missoula, Courtney Blazon, local artist, and Becca MacLean, Public Art Coordinator at Arts Missoula have been partnering on the creation of a virtual gallery since this past summer. Missoula, Montana has two sister cities; one in Palmerston North, New Zealand and another in Neckargemund, Germany. Global & Cultural Affairs in Arts Missoula is working to reinvigorate bonds and relationships with these cities through all means possible. The creation of this virtual gallery space will allow us to interact creatively with our sister cities by simply embedding or emailing a link for international viewers to easily navigate the art from across the world virtually instead of spending a fortune of time and resources to physically ship pieces of art work overseas.
This exhibition is titled, "A Year Without a Summer, Art Erupts: From Missoula to the World" and functions through a platform called Kunstmatrix that was created in Berlin, Germany. The organization that created this is still in its growing stages as is this virtual gallery idea itself. This entire process has been highly experimental.
Our intention is to embed this virtual gallery on our website, artsmissoula.org and send it to our sister cities in Germany and New Zealand within the next 6 months. We are also working to create a supplementary Youtube video with Courtney so she is able to provide more details on her exhibition for those overseas who are not able to physically speak with her.
