Let's Give Lunch
The LOA was excited to host its week-long Let's Give Lunch Facebook Live events to help raise money for LOA's Meals on Wheels in a new way. We set a very modest goal of $50,000 for this new way of fundraising and doing lunch with you. We still have donations and expenses trickling in so we hope to have an update soon. We expect to have met our goal. We do know that the Meals on Wheels Raffle raised more than $15,000 which is its highest total to date!
Thanks to all of our musical guests, emcee guests and donors that made all our Facebook Live events possible. Thanks to our special volunteers and clients for allowing us to tell their story! We couldn't have done it without you!
Takeout Hunger!
“Takeout Hunger” raised money to provide hot meals to local needy families, with those meals being purchased exclusively from local restaurants. One hundred percent (100%) of all donations to this project were used for this important purpose. 

Thank you so much for your support of local businesses and your concern for those less fortunate! The seniors in our community who received the meals were so very thankful to get these delicious restaurants meals delivered. More than 12,000 meals were delivered thanks to community support!

Foundation supports emergency needs of seniors
It’s easy to get overwhelmed with the news these days. So, we’d like to share an uplifting story.
 
We often take for granted a hot meal at home but for thousands of food-insecure households in Virginia it’s daily life. How can you possibly work or learn effectively
when your stomach is hungry? Our communities often turn to meal delivery programs when there is nowhere else to go. During normal times, the Local Office on Aging supports more than 3,000 families and individuals in the Valley. But these are far from normal times.
 
Recognizing that COVID-19 has put a growing strain on feeding the community, the James M. Cox Foundation, the charitable arm of Cox Enterprises, stepped in with a surprise. During a video call Local Office on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program was surprised with a $25,000 donation. This is in addition to the $10,000 awarded on behalf of Cox Charities to LOA Meals on Wheels in March.
 
“We were shocked and thrilled to get this support,” said President and CEO Ron Boyd. “We’re thankful for those in the community who are recognizing the needs of area homebound seniors.”
 
With the donation the LOA has been able to restock its food pantry and get more emergency bags out to our seniors. The food pantry remains fluid in that we get the food out almost as fast as it comes in. We will continue to be in need of food donations and donations of paper products in order to get it out to the most vulnerable clients.
Ironman donates emergency funding
On behalf of the Carilion Clinic IRONMAN 70.3 Virginia’s Blue Ridge, the IRONMAN Foundation created Operation IRONAID Nutrition – a program that aims to address hunger and nutrition in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Operation IRONAID Nutrition, the IRONMAN Foundation is donating a $250 gift card to each of our 100+ race communities in the U.S.. The goal is to help our race communities to distribute food/ meals/ support hunger related issues as a result of COVID-19. The Local Office On Aging received the Operation IRONAID Nutrition donation in the Roanoke community! Sarah Klemencic presented us with the gift card which will be used to purchase food for our emergency food pantry!
We are very thankful again for a partnership with Feeding America! We picked up 125 produce boxes today for our clients in May. They received fresh apples, onions, carrots and potatoes! In June, we picked up another 160 boxes to be distributed to our homebound seniors! In some cases, fresh produce is a rare treat for our seniors so we are thrilled to have the opportunity to get it to them!
