Collaboration Between Peace Center and Global and Cultural Affairs Office Results in Joint Cultural Identity Workshop

On January 26, Global and Cultural Affairs in Arts Missoula and the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center (JRPC) in Missoula teamed up to offer a Cultural Identity Workshop, in the
Pay ne Family Native American Center on the UofM Campus. This workshop was a follow-up of the Seeing the Elephant Unconference, the JRPC offered last summer, tackling the question "Does my world look different from yours?
Conversations continued throughout last fall with participants suggesting a follow-up event that would have "cultural identity" as its central topic for presentations, discussions and community participation. Cultural Identity, a person's self-conception and self-perception, is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture. Everyone has a cultural identity. Knowing where you come from can give you a sense of belonging and a sense of self. For some people, culture is more about the families you create rather than your birth heritage. This could mean a local club, community group or sports team. " I was amazed about the diversity of the people who attended our workshop on cultural identity, composed of students and faculty, as well as members from the Native American and transgender communities, with participant age ranging from 20 to 80", according to Dr. Udo Fluck, Director, Global and Cultural Affairs in Arts Missoula.

"
Folks were interested, engaged and definitely full of questions and thoughts", Betsy Mulligan-Daque, Executive Director of the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center observed during the half-day workshop. "There was enough enthusiastic support among the workshop attendees to continue the conversation in the future and offer a platform, an outlet for our community to explore together, communicate and learn from one another", suggests Fluck.
