Heidi Cerneka starts new ministry at U.S-Mexico border

Last month veteran Maryknoll lay missioner Heidi Cerneka began a new ministry at the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso, Texas. She is working as an immigration attorney with community agencies serving migrants and asylum seekers. Her clients have been threatened, family members have been murdered, and they have sold their land to be able to flee their countries in the dark of night. Dear friends,

During a recent retreat gathering of Maryknoll missioners – sisters, fathers, brothers and lay missioners – from southeast Asia, a Maryknoll sister reminded us, “The joy of the Gospel is not about feeling good. It is the discovery and the deepening of the belief that God is in all that we do.”

Joy is a word I use to characterize Maryknoll missioners who strive to accompany our global sisters and brothers so that they may live lives that reflect their God-given dignity. The joy that flows through our lay missioners in Cambodia reflects their belief in a God who accompanies us in all they do. Witnessing their ministries – from physiotherapy for differently-abled children to empowerment of the deaf and hard-of-hearing, from advocacy for vulnerable people at risk of human trafficking to educating college students seeking to make their own mark in the world – and their commitment provides a profound glimpse into God’s compassion and joy.

Indeed, God is in all that we do. What an amazing gift that is!

Maryknoll Lay Missioners has been working for 30 years with Cambodians in ministries related to health care, social services, education, land rights, migration, disability, gender issues and sex trafficking. All of these focus areas will be seen through the day-to-day ministries of current Maryknoll lay missioners.
