Purdue establishes National Academy for Veterinary Medicine
With help from a new federal grant, Purdue University's College of Veterinary Medicine is stepping up to expand access to the veterinary profession for talented individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds and address the need for more veterinarians serving rural areas and protecting food safety.

The Health Resources & Services Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, has awarded the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine a $3.18 million grant to launch "Vet Up! The National Health Careers Opportunity Program" (HCOP) Academy for Veterinary Medicine.

Washington State to build new WADDL facility
Washington State University's College of Veterinary Medicine broke ground Sept. 15 on a new facility for the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (WADDL), creating a new wing of the Paul G. Allen Center for Global Animal Health.

According to the announcement, WADDL marks a new era in diagnostic testing and disease surveillance, supporting public health and food security, animal health and the success of thriving livestock industries. WADDL serves as a first-alert system for both animal and human health.

ADSA Joins in Sponsoring Webinar to Discuss USDA Plans
On Sept 20 ADSA and FASS joined 27 other science based groups in sponsoring a webinar "USDA Research Relocation and Reorganization: Perspectives from Former USDA Chief Scientists and Administrators". The webinar featured Catherine Woteki, Former USDA Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics; Gale Buchanan, Former USDA Under Secretary of Agriculture for Research, Education, and Economics; and Susan Offutt, Former USDA Economic Research Service Administrator. They were joined late in the webinar by USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Censky.
Panelist recommendations for USDA included:
  • Delay any further actions on relocation until questions can be addressed
  • Convene formal public comment period
  • Provide data and analysis used to inform decision to relocate
Panelist recommendations for Congress included:
  • Hold oversight hearings
  • Request an independent study with a cost-benefit analysis of the plan
  • Delay/ Prohibit relocation and reorganization until questions & concerns addressed in appropriations and/or the farm bill
They encouraged scientists to be informed and speak out as the plans will have significant impacts on future research. The  slides have been posted and a video recording of the webinar is also available online.

Report on the 2018 EAAP annual meeting
Amy Vasquez, DVM, PhD, 2017 ADSA Novus Travel Award recipient
As a winner of the 2017 ADSA oral graduate student presentations, I was grateful to be able to attend a conference that offers multidisciplinary lectures from young researchers as well as from experts in each field. With over 3 beaches within walking distance, 85 degree heat, and ice cream on every corner, the program for the 2018 EAAP annual meeting in Dubrovnik, Croatia had to be intriguing enough to attract its attendees inside. Lucky for me, it was! My favorite talks were those touching on local livestock breeds and improving efficiency and sustainability for our producers. Additionally, I was given a 30 minute spot at the beginning of the "Improving management practices and feed efficiency in cattle" session to summarize my PhD research-particularly, strategies for selective dry cow treatment. I received a lot of great feedback and questions.
I was extremely impressed by the graduate student presentations; conveying findings of research projects as well as the discussion of the related impacts in one's second language was quite impressive.
The social program and coffee breaks were also outstanding. I was able to meet European colleagues while eating local prosciutto, sipping limoncello, and drinking in the Adriatic coastline. Surprisingly, once the conference was over, it was nearly impossible to find a good cup of take-out coffee, and I was appreciative to be staying with a Turkish host the last few nights of our trip. My husband and toddler were also in attendance, and it was great to explore Old Town Dubrovnik, the Peljesac Peninsula, and parts of Bosnia prior to our departure.
I would like to extend my appreciation to Novus International for funding my trip to such a great conference and a beautiful country. I wish to thank EAAP and ADSA for granting me the ability to share my research. Finally, I thank Novus, EAAP, and ADSA for continuing to support graduate students in their adventures of speaking, networking, researching, and collaborating.

JDS® presents collection on calf health and management
Six new USDA studies in the October issue of JDS focus on preweaned heifer calves
The United States Department of Agriculture-National Animal Health Monitoring System (USDA-NAHMS) conducted a survey of 2,545 preweaned heifer calves across 104 dairy operations in 2014. The study, which took place in 13 states over 18 months, covered a large cross-section of management of preweaned heifer calves in the United States, and the results will be published in six new articles in the October issue of the Journal of Dairy Science.
"Results from the study contain the latest information on the health and management of preweaned heifer calves in the United States. The information in these publications will help to improve the health and well-being of preweaned dairy heifer calves," said Jason Lombard, DVM, of USDA-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service-(APHIS)-Veterinary Services (VS) Center for Epidemiology and Animal Health, NAHMS, Fort Collins, CO, USA.
Management of preweaned dairy calves is complex, and many factors play a role in the success of practices at the farm level. Rearing heifer calves is also an expensive endeavor, at approximately $5.50 per calf per day. Therefore, research to maximize the efficiency of raising replacement heifers and minimize losses due to morbidity and mortality is extremely important. Because the industry is continually changing, however, having current information on management practices throughout the United States is a necessity. As such, these six studies from the USDA-NAHMS represent an important collection to reflect the current state of the dairy industry.
The articles included in the October issue of the Journal of Dairy Science include survey results on descriptive characteristics of preweaned heifer raising practices, colostrum quality and passive transfer status, Cryptosporidium and Giardia infections, the presence of Escherichia coli, morbidity and mortality, as well as average daily gain. These studies provide dairy producers with a wealth of information to help them improve their calf-rearing practices in terms of outcomes and efficiency. The authors hope that the results may also be used to guide education programs and improve overall calf health.
ADSA has made these articles are openly available from September 20 - October 20, 2018 at http://www.journalofdairyscience.org
