D is for Determination!
On September 14th, we submitted the community's annual US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Continuum of Care application. Community in this case (for HUD's purposes) means Clay, Duval and Nassau counties.
In this year's application, we have several new projects that fill housing gaps for two extremely vulnerable populations - youth and domestic violence survivors.
JASMYN's
project will help provide rapid rehousing to youth that are homeless. And we need it! Today, there are 138 young people with nowhere else to turn, that's 55% more than in 2017.
But, what is rapid rehousing, you ask? It means housing someone within 30 days or less.
The
Hubbard House
project will fund rapid rehousing for domestic violence survivors. People fleeing dangerous situations need a safe place to call home. To put this in perspective, Hubbard House had to turn away 519 survivors last year. Um no, not acceptable.
Now we wait. HUD will release it's funding notification around the end of the year. We're hoping for a happy holiday season.

In 2018, we looked at our HMIS data by Race.
In 2016 and 2017, we found Blacks or African Americans represent more than 60% of the HMIS system population defined as homeless, but only represent 25% of the total population for Clay, Duval and Nassau counties as reported in the 2010 and 2016 (estimated) census data.
We evaluated our quantitative data and are preparing to conduct a comprehensive review of the qualitative data, which will include homeless service provider and stakeholder surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
Stay tuned - much more to come.
