SOCK COLLECTION!

Again this year, we are collecting new warm socks for
Grace's Kitchen.

NEW Socks are needed for distribution at Grace's Kitchen on Saturday February 23rd on St. Bernard's next day of service.

Please be generous and pick up a package of WARM socks for men, women or children the next time you are shopping.  Warm socks can mean the difference between being able to stay warm in the cold winter days ahead or having frostbite.  This is one item that is not usually distributed at shelters and very much needed.

Socks may be left in the basket in the Narthex and will be picked up for distribution to Grace's Kitchen.

Thank you for your outreach in this important ministry to St. Bernard's.
Be Encouraged
and Be a Good Encourager

Continues February 10 4-5:15 pm

A four-session training series for teenagers and parents seeking to encourage friends and each other will be held on Sundays beginning Jan. 13 at St. Bernard's Episcopal Church.

The series will be led by the Rev. Beth Rauen Sciaino, Priest-in-Charge at St. Bernard's, and is continues this week on Feb. 10 and again on Feb. 24, from 4-5:15 p.m. in the new Parish Hall adjoining the Church. This is an interfaith opportunity and all are welcome to participate.

The sessions are intended to provide listening techniques for young people and parents. For teens, the goal is "to become equipped to walk alongside a peer and encourage him or her through supportive listening that allows the friend to identify action steps." In addition, each session will include a guided exercise related to self-compassion, compassion for others, anxiety, or focus, offering life-giving responses for daily life.

Please note you do not have to attend all four session for it to be a benefit!

Letter from Cindy McWilliams who is traveling to Guatemala
with Faith in Practice!

Dear Friends and Family,

I am returning for my 8th trip to Guatemala as Faith In Practice Team 603 photographer.  Like every year I am excited, nervous, and terrified of what I will see, hear, learn in this faraway amazing, beautiful, cruel place where I am surrounded by God's love and the hope and grace of the people I will meet.

As a Faith In Practice member it is also my job to Share the Mission, spread the word of the need for these good deeds. Through your prayers we will succeed in bringing relief and healing to individuals, families, and whole communities as their loved ones are cared for and prayers are answered. You all have been so incredible, supporting both this mission and me and for that I thank you. If you would like to follow Team 603's journey, this link  will (hopefully!) take you right to our blog and photos  that should (hopefully) begin Sat., Feb. 9th (again we are the first team down, have a new way of uploading to website, and there are usually bugs to work out!).

Should you like to donate to Faith In Practice that can be done through this donation page link:

I have said before it is the love and prayers from you that give me the strength and courage to jump off this ledge and fly.

Love and thanks,
Cindy

Women Leaders in the Early Church:
Following the Evidence
Tuesday March 5, 2019, 6-7:30 pm
12th  Floor Lounge, Lowenstein Center Lincoln Center Campus, 113 W60th St, NYC.

In her acclaimed book Crispina and Her Sisters, author Christine Schenk, C.S.J., explores the history of women's roles in early Christianity, as well as the authority that women exercised in the ancient church.
Looking closely at the visual imagery found on the burial artifacts of these early Christian women, Sister Schenk demonstrates how they and those around them saw women as influential leaders within the church.

An evening of dialogue and conversation with Sister Schenk-delving into this fascinating history and asking what it means for Christian communities today. As a columnist for the National Catholic Reporter and the retired cofounder of FutureChurch, Sister Schenk brings wisdom and experience to the conversation about the role of women in the church.

You can register for this  free event here!

Or if
you are interested in going with other St. Bernard's parishioners as a group please let either Pastor Beth or our Parish Administrator, Alison Davidson know.
