Time: 5:00 - 6:00 PM

Symposium at the Barnes Foundation
Date: Friday, April 5, 2019
Time: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Light is  the  essential problem for museum and conservation professionals responsible for works on paper: to view and appreciate these artifacts, you must have light; however, all visible, UV, and infrared exposure has cumulatively negative effects. The display of works on paper is a balancing act—museums are aware of the causes of deterioration but need to make artifacts accessible.

What questions should be asked when a work on paper is requested for exhibition? This symposium will address strategies to manage the exhibition of works on paper while balancing preservation. A variety of approaches will be presented at the symposium, including the use of lighting design, microfadeometry as a risk assessment strategy, and facsimiles. Case studies will offer approaches to challenging exhibition lighting, with the Barnes itself as one case study.

Registrants are invited to visit CCAHA on Thursday, April 4, from 5:00 - 6:00 PM. CCAHA conservators will offer demonstrations on a variety of facsimile options and discuss conservation treatment to works on paper.

This symposium is intended for conservators, curators, and staff responsible for the care and exhibition of works on paper in museum collections.

Take the Field Services Alliance Survey

CCAHA strives to ensure that cultural heritage is protected and well cared for across the country. One of the ways we do this is by taking on leadership roles within associations, boards, and other groups. CCAHA Preservation Specialist Samantha Forsko has served as a committee member, vice chair, and, since 2016, chair of the American Association of State and Local History ( AASLH) Field Services Alliance (FSA) . An affinity group of AASLH, the FSA is an organized group of individuals, offices, and agencies that provide training, guidance, and other forms of assistance to local historical societies, archives, libraries, and museums in their respective states or regions.

Under Samantha’s leadership, FSA is creating an evaluation tool to help improve the services provided by outreach and education offices across the country. We are asking you to help with this national effort by filling out the following survey, which should only take 10-15 minutes.

LECTURE
The Daguerreotypes of Robert Cornelius
Date: Tuesday, February 12
Time: 5:30 - 7:30 PM
Location : CCAHA
Presenter: Rachel Wetzel, Senior Photograph Conservator, CCAHA
*S old out*

Philadelphia was an epicenter for early photography in 1839. America’s oldest extant photograph was taken in Center City and improvements to the daguerreotype process were made by Philadelphians Paul Beck Goddard and Robert Cornelius. Cornelius took what is heralded as the first “selfie” (right), and he also established Philadelphia’s first photographic portrait studio. Rachel Wetzel, Senior Photograph Conservator at the CCAHA, has been working with colleagues to catalog all of the existing daguerreotypes by Cornelius, as part of a project that will culminate in a publicly searchable database hosted at Yale University’s Lens Media Lab.

This event includes a lecture on the history of early photography in Philadelphia. Wetzel will explain the history of daguerreotype cleaning treatments and how they've affected the long-term stability of the images. The audience will also get a first glance at the images and information included in the Cornelius daguerreotype database and a behind-the-scenes tour of CCAHA’s conservation lab.
