This Week at St. Paul's

Rector's Notes:
The School of Theology at the University of the South/Sewanee invited me to spend two weeks as a fellow in residence starting Monday, February 11. While there I will be working on three projects: 1) The creation of a syllabus of primary documents related to the proper role and function of religion in the early evolution of our republic. I am particularly interested to create a collection of primary documents and descriptions accessible to middle school age students as they consider the relation of religion to civic life in today's moral and ethical challenges. 2) The intersection of theology and society at the macroeconomic level, considering especially the moral agency of Adam Smith's "invisible hand." This abstraction might be distilled to the question, "What is a reasonable ethical and theological response to the socioeconomic reality we know as modern capitalism arising from the moral sentiments of Adam Smith?" Finally, 3) I am interested to explore the story of the lynching of Levi Harrington, an African American, on April 3, 1882 for the murder of a police officer in Kansas City. Immediately after his lynching, Mr. Harrington was exonerated of guilt in this murder, but his story was left vastly under-told as the police shooting and the lynching occurred the same day Jesse James was killed north of Kansas City. Perhaps the most curious thing in this story is the reversal of the conviction of the actual killer, an African American, two times by the Supreme Court of Missouri based upon the issue of the authority of the police officer to execute an arrest. Ironically, this same question frequently arises in modern incidents of police on suspect violence in our time.
While I do not expect to complete any of these projects while there, I do hope to make strides in identifying primary sources for project #1 (e.g. Treaty of Tripoli), create a bibliography for project #2, and read more on the history of lynching in our country for project #3. I am thankful to Sewanee for allowing me this opportunity and intend to dive deeply in the resources of the library while there.

Steinway* Centennial Celebration!!
Mark your calendars for
Sunday, February 24, 10:30 a.m.
On March 14, 2019, our Steinway turns 100 years old. We will celebrate our piano's "centennial" on February 24 by having a Chamber Music Sunday. Our organist, Kurt Knecht, will be joined by violinist Dorris Dai-Janssen and cellist Ho Anthony Ahn. Music will include a movement of the beautiful Fauré piano trio and the exciting first movement of the Brahms Trio #1. The service will also include, Messiaen's poignant Louange a l'eternite de Jesus [Meditation on the Eternity of Jesus] - a work written inside a Nazi prisoner of war camp. Finally, there will be a premiere of a new piece Kurt wrote for this occasion for piano trio, soprano, and baritone which will feature two vocalists from our choir, Sarah Anderson and Joshua Lawlor. It will be a Sunday to remember that celebrates our piano and the joy of music at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, KCMO.

We have a simple systems in the church which need a few sets of trained eyes and ears to help us manage & trouble-shoot now and then.
