NEWS FROM ST. MARY'S

A community of Christian worship, well-being and service.

Inspiring Times...

Last week Judy Hall and I had the privilege of representing St. Mary's delivering an oversized check for $1750 to our community partners at the MLK Jr. Center. Heather Strout, the Assistant Executive Director, and Marilyn Warren, Executive Director spent time showing off the place, programs and people who create this center of nourishment and support in our local community. It is inspiring.

While we were there Jim McGaw of the Portsmouth Times was with us. You can read his story here. One thing that stands out to me is the gratitude that the MLK Center staff have for all the support they receive from volunteers and organizations all over the island. The center thrives because people and communities give and receive through our connection to their mission. I was reminded of our history of deep relationship with the center as Warren told McGaw that "no single organization has done more for the community center than St. Mary's."

This relationship is important to us. I invite all our members and friends to remember the food programs that care for our neighbors through MLK. Checkout their website here. When you are at the grocery store don't forget to shop for your neighbors. As our program year is kicking off, let's kick up our food collection. You will find baskets at the entryway of the parish house and historic church. At our 10 a.m. worship, we have a wagon at the back that will be pulled up during the offertory. This is liturgy in action - connecting our thanksgiving for God's abundance as an offering to God in a tangible way.
We have an amazing weekend planned to include lavish worship, fellowship, theater and hospitality to many guests. Our guest preacher will be the Rev'd Canon Scott Gunn. See you at Church. It too will be inspiring.

Faithfully, Jennifer+

Blessing of the Animals...

Saint Francis Of Assisi was the son of wealthy Italian cloth merchants who decided to turn from wealth and power and to live in poverty and simplicity with his followers, closely modeled after the life of Jesus and his disciples. Francis was especially moved by God's presence in nature, calling the elements and the animals "sister" and "brother" and so he is associated with the good stewardship of the environment and of animals.

To honor him and our animal companions,
we will bless your pets at all services on
October 6 & 7

Your pets must be leashed, crated, or otherwise contained to guard against fear or injury for them or our human churchgoers. You may also bring a photo to be prayed over instead.  Join us for this joyful
autumn tradition!

Hurricane Florence...

Greetings, Sisters and Brothers in Christ.

Episcopal Relief & Development is now supporting dioceses along the coast as they respond to the aftermath of Hurricane Florence.

Please continue to pray for all those impacted by the hurricane, for those that continue to respond to emergencies, those that have begun the initial work of relief and recovery, and for church communities as they reach out to their most vulnerable members and neighbors.

Contributions to the Hurricane Relief Fund will help Episcopal Relief & Development support Church and other local partners as they provide critical emergency assistance to those most in need.

Wishing you peace,

Sean McConnell

Prepare Yourself for Worship...
Saturday evening worship on the bridal path through September 15 (weather permitting)

This Week's Collect
G rant us, Lord, not to be anxious about earthly things, but to love things heavenly; and even now, while we are placed among things that are passing away, to hold fast to those that shall endure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Looking to enhance your knowledge of the bible and your experience of worship? Believe it or not, there is an easy way to do both! The lectionary is the book that contains the Sunday readings. There are three year-long cycles of readings: A, B, and C. If you come to church each Sunday for three years, you will hear almost the entire bible. To find the readings, all you need to do is click on the link below! Reading and praying through these sacred texts before coming to church could be a game changer for your alertness in worship and your biblical knowledge.

Christian Formation...

Good News For Kids began last Sunday. During the 10AM service each week that Sunday School is held, Children will be invited to hear a kid's gospel and bible lesson together as the sermon is taking place. They will go with two leaders and will return during the sign of peace. Children are encouraged to worship at any and all of our services, and getting them accustomed to the prayers and responses is important. "Good News For Kids" is a way to also engage them deeper in the bible readings at the service. Please join us!

Journey Through The Bible  began last week . There are classes for all ages, and breakfast for teens. You are welcome to join us at any time; nobody will be turned away. A repeat of Sunday classes are held on Wednesdays at noon in the adult ed room.

Please see Gabe Giella, Director of Christian Formation, or call (846-9700, Ext. 104) or email him at [email protected]

Weekly Contemplative Practice Saturdays 4 pm, a prayer and scripture study including silence and reflection will be held in the church. This weekly offering is a perfect prelude to our contemplative service at 5. This practice will open new doors of prayer and discovery for anyone looking to go deeper in their life of faith. If you wish to know the presence of God in the quiet grounding of sacred text and community, join us in the historic church.

Sermons are back...

You will find the sermons on the homepage  www.smcportsmouth.org  just scroll down a bit - and you can listen and ponder them at your leisure or share with someone beyond our church.
