Pioneer Pride
In reviewing this Friday issue prior to release, I could not help but smile looking at the varied success stories as well as examples of our Pioneers reaching out to help local middle and elementary school students. We have so many exceptional young adults attending Oak Ridge and these Community Briefs offer only a quick snapshot of all their efforts and community service. I am so proud of these students and of the momentum that has been maintained now that we are already well inside the month of February.
College Acceptances & Scholarships
At the time this Community Brief was released, 207 Oak Ridge students have been accepted into colleges and universities. Of this group, 73 students have also been offered scholarships amounting to over $3.5 million ($3,500,472.00 to be exact). Way to go Class of 2019!
Stellar Recognition from OCPS
Congratulations to our
Teacher of the Year, Rosina Monteiro, and to our
Support Person of the Year, Leonie Chandersingh, who were both recently recognized at OCPS' inaugural Stellar Awards (pictured below with myself Jan. 24th at the Rosen Shingle Creek Resort).
This was a special recognition event to honor and celebrate principals, assistant principals, teachers, and support staff that were nominated as their individual school's #1 for the 2018-2019 school year by fellow employees. Bearing in mind that OCPS is the 9th largest school system in the nation (of about 15,000), this makes it quite an achievement. Ms. Monterio and Ms. Chandersingh are indeed part of an elite group.
Annual Parent Survey
The 2019 Parent Survey has been available online now for a few weeks. If you have a student attending Oak Ridge, please take a few minutes to complete the survey. Your responses are kept anonymous, but the combined results help us tremendously with our school improvement plans. Thank you.

Pictured very top and just below: Black History Month kicked off one week ago across the United States. This year's theme, "Black Migrations," highlights the challenges and successes of African Americans as they moved from farms in the agricultural South to centers of industry in the North, Midwest, and West - especially the migrations that occurred in the twentieth century. Through these migrations, millions of African Americans reshaped the demographic landscape of America, starting new lives in cities such as Philadelphia, Detroit, Chicago, and New York City. The painting above is part of artist Jacob Lawrence's famous 1940-41 "Migration Series."

Upcoming Events
National School Counseling Week
This week has been National School Counseling Week across the United States and at Oak Ridge. Over 100,000 school counselors provide students with academic, college/career and social/emotional development. Bottom line: school counselors are helping students win. This week we celebrated them at ORHS. Students wrote letters to their counselors to say thank you and explain the impact they have had on their lives.

AP 2D Photography with Mr. Pedlow
Mr. Pedlow's AP 2D Photography class is investigating Triptych and Diptych.* This is the coolest concept that contains 2 or 3 images. Respective, can create a final image. The students must take into account-theme, sequence and artistic intention when producing the projects ending and outcome.
* Triptych and Diptych are pieces of art created and divided into three or two sections.

Boys Varsity Basketball
Senior Night
Our varsity boys' basketball team celebrated its Senior Night in style on February 5th overwhelming visiting Winter Park 81-48 in the regular-season finale for both teams. The reigning Class 9A state champions got scoring from nine players in its final tune-up before it hosts next week's Class 9A, District 5 tournament. Way to go Pioneers!

Pioneer Orchestra performs for Black History Month
Congratulations to our Pioneer Orchestra lead by Janice Roberts! They performed at the Zora Festival in Eatonville to celebrate Zora and Black History Month.

Oak Ridge Broadcast - Winners for Southeastern U.S.
ORTV Morning News Crew and Ms. Jackson
Congratulations to the ORTV Morning News Crew and Instructor Jenevieve Jackson. They participated in the Student Television Network Broadcast Excellence Contest and won first place in the Southeast region. The students who produce the show have been in the TV Production program for four years and work to produce a daily taped news cast.

No Excuses Mentoring Program (NEMP)
Community update after two marking periods . . .
NEMP, sponsored by Assistant Principal Orlando Norwood is doing great things! Forty-one students earned an unweighted grade point average of a 3.0 or higher for the second nine weeks of the school year (above). The juniors and seniors were also recently invited to attend the College Admission Process Workshop hosted by the Delta Omicron Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. This event focused on financial aid, college applications, and scholarships.
NEMP has also launched its interactive sports competition at Walker Middle School to kick off the New Year! They utilized sports as an engaging and competitive way to get to know their mentees while teaching them character building skills.
Finally, NEMP has partnered with the L.I.F.E. mentoring program to attend the Magic of Mentoring Minority Male Youth Summit at the Amway Center. Our students had the opportunity to discuss crime prevention and to role play how to respond to negative situations with Bo Outlaw and Nick Anderson.

L.I.F.E. recently participated in a vision board activity with their mentees at Sadler Elementary School. This activity was to encourage their younger "Brothers" to keep their dreams alive and to understand that anything in life requires faith and belief in themselves, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication.
