We've got a jammed pack week next week! You can refer to the September calendar for a complete listing of events on the schedule, but I thought I would highlight what I think are the most important events for parents/guardians to focus on.

Back to School Night...Tuesday, September 25th from
6- 7 p.m.  Y our opportunity to hear what's new at St. Michael's Academy and to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

Mass...Thursday, September 27th at
9:30 a.m.   Msgr. Liston will be here to help us celebrate the Feast of St. Michael (celebrated a couple of days earlier than the actual Feast). If you haven't come to one of our Masses, I promise you, you will find it very uplifting. Worth the effort!

Walk-a-thon...Friday, September 28th from 9-11 a.m.   A lways a fun day. And we can always use more volunteers (But I'll say it again, you MUST have the Safe Environment Training completed.)

Progress Reports...Friday, September 28...coming home in the red folders.  The first of our five week reckoning check-ins! Must be taken with a grain of salt, as we did get off to a rough start with that weather challenge!

So, if you haven't already realized it, we're back in the swing of things! Hang in there. Every effort you make is for the good of your child.

God's blessings,

Ms. Ann E. Dougal

 WOW!

Let's Here It For SMA!

We love to share GOOD NEWS!!!  And that's just what we have! For the second year in a row, St. Michael's Academy has begun the new school year with MORE students than they ended the previous year with. Now that's something to brag about!

And while we are at it, pat yourselves on the back as well.  Did you know that "word of mouth" is the number one avenue of marketing?  That means that you have done a fantastic job telling your families, friends and coworkers about SMA.  Keep up the great work - let everyone know about the St. Michael's Academy difference!

Reading Buddies

This week Mrs. Rowland's class will be meeting with their Reading Buddies for the first time. This is an exciting day not only for the first graders, but the fourth graders as well. This will allow the fourth graders to teach the first graders what positive behaviors look like. It also gives the "Little Buddies" a recognizable face to look up to in the school.

First grade reading is one of the most exciting learning periods in your child's life. He/She is going to match letters to sounds, see patterns in the spelling words, and learn to correctly pronounce words. By the end of first grade reading, he/she will recognize many words and be able to read easy books by him or herself. An entire universe of new words, sentences, and stories is waiting for your child. The Reading Buddies program at St. Michael's helps your child navigate the journey of reading with our fourth graders.

Both the first graders and fourth graders benefit in many ways from this program. The "Little Buddies" benefit from hearing the stories read aloud. This shows modeling of reading fluency, phrasing, and expression. Having a conversation with an older student about topics of interest increase vocabulary and oral language. Having regular opportunities to practice oral reading helps them gain fluency.

Lastly, but most importantly, this program shows the "Little Buddies" that reading is fun!

  Perfect Attendance

Good Attendance Pays Off !

Congratulations to our perfect attendance dress-down winners! In order to qualify for the weekly drawing, a student must have no absences, tardiness or early dismissals the previous week of school. We select one from PreK - 2nd grade, one from 3rd - 5th grade and one from 6th - 8th grade.  Congrats to this week's winners and one from a previous week!

 World Peace Day

Kindergarten Celebrates World Peace Day

Did you know that on September 21, 1981, the United Nations declared the day "International Day of Peace?"  All around the world people observe a day of peace.  They might conduct ceremonies, participate in community projects or simply take a moment to silently wish peace for everyone.

Our Kindergarten students read the book, "Can You Say Peace," created their own peace chain and colored pictures in observance of the day.

Peace be with you!

And While We Are Talking About Social Media...

Don't forget to like and share the SMA Facebook posts!  Every time you like and share, you help St. Michael's posts to be distributed to a wider audience.

And....have you gone to the SMA website (smaspringfield.org) and liked our school website as well?  While you are there, it only takes a moment to put a review in.  All of these types of things help people to learn about the mission of our school and to increase enrollment.

 Lost and Found

Lost and Found

We all know what happens....you send your child off to school with sweaters, sweatshirts, SMA vests, hats, lunch boxes, etc. and somehow when they get home, those items are not with them.   This is just a reminder to check the Lost and Found Box located near the elevator outside the cafeteria.  With only 4 weeks of school under our belts, the box already has many items in it!

Please write your child's name in all their belongings so that if something is misplaced, it is easily returned!

 Business Department

Before and After School Billing

The Business Department would like to remind families that any payment received after noon on Wednesdays will be applied to the next week's statement sent home with your child.

It's easy to forget to send payments in on Monday but weekly payments are expected.
