"Covenant Sunday:
Free for What?"
From the very beginning ours has been a covenantal faith more than a creedal one. On this Sunday, when we honor the covenants of our congregation, we will reflect on why living in covenant is so important when you live without doctrine in a "free faith."

"Her One Wild and Precious Life"
With the recent death of poet Mary Oliver, whose work touched deep veins among Unitarian Universalists, mid-winter is the perfect time to stop and appreciate the grace offered in her poetry. Running throughout it is a deep trust of the universe and a profound acceptance of the rhythms of life. The Adult Choir will sing Rutter's "For the Beauty of the Earth." Come, hear some of Oliver's poetry, and reflect on how and why it has touched us so.

Third FUUSB Congregational Meeting This Sunday
Your Board of Trustees invites all members of the FUUSB community to discuss important plans regarding the direction of ministry at the FUUSB. As a community, your input during transition team listening sessions, as well as stewardship consultation with Mark Ewart, has led to deep discussions between board members and ministerial staff that we wish to share with the greater congregation. We encourage all members of the FUUSB to attend one of these sessions to hear a summary of your own feedback and discuss ideas for our lead ministry over the next 3 to 5 years.

The first two sessions were held on February 3 and February 5. The third session will be held on:
Sunday, February 10  at 12:15 p.m. in the Sanctuary.

Childcare will be available and refreshments and snacks will be served.

Thank you from your Board of Trustees.

Rev-eries
Rev. Susan Milnor, Interim Senior Minister

In late September, Caleb Pillsbury agreed to spend a few months directing our Adult Choir as we got a Music Director Search process underway. His work here was scheduled to end with the calendar year, but he graciously agreed to extend through January and into as much of February as his schedule allowed. This Sunday, February 10, will be his last service with us. I hope you will join us in worship Sunday and find an opportunity to extend your own appreciation for the music Caleb and the choir have shared with us over these past few months.

In the meantime, we have reached the interview stage in the Music Search process. And the senior staff is looking at whether there is any possibility for keeping our choir singing together between the end of Caleb's interim period and that time when a new music director is brought on board. In the meantime, Sam Whitesell and Wayne Schneider will be on our keyboards, as ever, lifting us with their musical inspiration.

Join Us for Good Food, Friendship and Music at the  February 9 FUUSB Potluck and Coffeehouse

Winter's settled in, there can be no doubt
It's tempting to hunker, and not to go out
But as we await, the return of the sun
Let's gather for music, good food, and some fun

Join us, dear friends, on Saturday night
To feast and make music, create our own light
We'll eat, tell stories, laugh and sing
At our monthly UU coffeehouse thing

We start with a potluck, right about six
You don't have to hassle, don't get in a fix
Bring a hot entrée, a salad or stew
If you can, something yummy, to nourish a few

Sign up, if you're psyched, for the open mic
Or sit back and listen, if that's what you'd like
Share a poem, a story, a solo, or song
Tap your feet, clap your hands, or perhaps hum along

All ages are welcome, all talents are relished
It's a pretty sweet scene, don't think I embellish
There's really not much, that you must do
Just one thing's important, and that's to bring you!

What : Our Monthly FUUSB Potluck and Coffeehouse
Who : Everyone! Friends and family  welcome
Where : The Parlors, First UU Society of Burlington
When : Saturday, February 9, 6-8:30 p.m.

Join Our First Online Theme Circle
Rev. Andre Mol, Developmental Assistant Minister for Pastoral Care and Membership

This season we are offering an online gathering for one of our Theme Circles. Our online offering provides an alternative to participate in Theme Circles for those who might not be able to attend one of our in-person groups at the Meeting House. The online group will meet February through June on the third Thursday of the month, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m., using a video conference platform which is accessible from your computer, smartphone or tablet. We have three more spots available for participants to join this group!

Theme Circle groups meet with a trained facilitator at specific monthly times to discuss, reflect, and explore our monthly spiritual theme. Participation in a Theme Circle is a wonderful way to make new friends, connect with old friends, and foster meaningful connections in our large congregation.

If you would like to join this online group, please email me at [email protected] by Friday, February 15.

Regards,

Andre

Black Lives of UU (BLUU) Fundraising
Gabriel Ely

Our team is humbled and thrilled that we as a congregation exceeded our Black Lives of UU (BLUU) fundraising goal. After a very impactful "Honoring the Campbells" worship service presented by our guests from the Nashua, NH UU congregation, you all were so generous and supportive during the special collection, of the mission of the Racial Justice Team (RJT) and the larger efforts within the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). Because we met our goal, the amount we raised will be matched by our Northern New England District (NNED), and by a very generous couple, Julie and Brad Bradburd, so every $1 we raised as a congregation actually gives $3 to BLUU.

To date we have raised $5,814.73. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you to all who donated and supported this RJT goal for this fiscal year.

If you did not attend the worship service and/or were not able to give during our special collection on Sunday, January 27th, you can still give to support BLUU. Leave it in the office indicating that it is for BLUU Fundraising or drop it by the RJT table in the Parlors during worship services.

You can listen to this and any other past worship services on Soundcloud here:  https://soundcloud.com/user-607731177 .

Racism in Unitarian Universalism
Book Series
Zoe Hart & Peggy Owen Sands

Over the past three years the Racial Justice Team has organized three services that looked at racism within Unitarian Universalism - both its historical roots and its present day reality. In the coming months we invite you to join us in going deeper with a series of book readings and discussions. Together we'll read and discuss three books.

Unitarian Universalists of Color is a collection of essays by UUs of color about their experience in UU congregations. Centering is a collection of essays by UU ministers of color about challenges they face in leading mostly white congregations. And Darkening the Doorways by Reverend Mark Morrison-Reid looks at the history of Unitarian Universalism that brought us to where we are today.

You can join us for one, some, or all of the books. If you're interested, contact Zoe Hart at
[email protected] . When we know who's interested, we can find dates and times that work well for as many of us as possible.

Yuuth Group Weekly
Mary Loomis, Youth Ministry Coordinator

Thank you to everyone who came out last Sunday to support the Yuuth Group's Waffle Breakfast Fundraiser! Many bellies were fed and smiles shared. Don't forget to mark your calendars for next month's Pancake Breakfast which will be held on  Sunday, March 24 after both services.

Last week Yuuth Group members Cianya and Mak, and Youth Advisors, Sarah Russell and Mary Loomis volunteered at ANew Place on North Street. The four cooked a dinner of black bean soup, bread, and brownies, and enjoyed sharing a great meal and better conversation with the residents of ANew Place.  This week   students are meeting to plan and prepare for their upcoming Valentine's Day Fundraiser.

8th Grade OWL Facilitators Needed
Erika Reif, Family Ministry Assistant

Our 8th Grade OWL program has been a great success this year, thanks to the dedication of our volunteer facilitators. We need more trained individuals to continue to offer this valuable service to our community!

Here is an opportunity to make a real difference, by helping us provide comprehensive sexuality education, not just to the youth of our congregation, but to some of their classmates as well.

Consider becoming a trained 7-9th Grade OWL Facilitator, by attending a weekend training in Auburndale, Massachusetts on May 3-5. (Please note, OWL Facilitators are required to be 25 years of age or older.) FUUSB will cover the fees, which include room and board, for incoming members of our OWL team.

Spots fill up fast, so contact Andrea at
[email protected] or 862-5630 X 28, as soon as possible for more information about our OWL program. More information on the facilitator training can be found here.

Sunday Scheduling for the Parlors
Opportunities - add to your calendar or click for the monthly web calendar Mary Williams, Society Administrator

Since Sundays at FUUSB are usually very busy, we are asking that groups sign up ahead of time if you plan to use a table in the Parlors after the services. Due to space limitations, we are hoping to limit tabling to two groups at a time.

If your team plans on tabling in the Parlors on a Sunday, please email me at [email protected] or call 862-5630, ext. 21 and I will add your group to our facility schedule. If you would like to see what has already been scheduled, visit the FUUSB calendar at the bottom of our uusociety.org homepage or click here.

Nurturing Congregational Connections!

With Nurturing Connections as our underlying theme, we invite you to the NNED 2019 Spring Assembly and Annual Meeting, Friday evening April 5th and Saturday, April 6th at the UU Church of Concord, NH.

UUs in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont tell us it's a priority to sustain and strengthen our congregational collaborations. Come find out how we'll do that!

Support, counsel, coaching, consultations, workshops, webinars, cluster gatherings, and retreats are resources congregations can access now through our UU New England Region (NER).

Come meet your NER staffers and gather samples of the harvested wisdom, practices, and learning materials available to you for growing healthy and vibrant UUism in our home churches. You'll meet leaders from other congregations and discover how together we plan to forge supportive relationships.
