President Corner
New Year, New Milestones

Healthy, joyous and successful 2019 to you and your loved ones!

2019 promises to be a year of exciting developments for electromobility in Canada and globally. At the federal level, after our in-depth consultation related to the clean fuel standard, we expect to see electricity recognized as a clean transportation "fuel". We also hope to finally hear the national ZEV strategy. Provincially, the ZEV standard in B.C. will certainly be a key development.

2019 will also be a year of multiple municipal-level developments. To recognize the increasingly important role that municipalities are playing in electromobility, EMC will be organizing the first Municipal EV Leader awards. We will be providing more on this in the coming weeks. Award winners will be announced at EV2019VÉ.  This is but one of the multiple reasons to attend EMC's tenth annual conference and trade show. I look forward to seeing each of you in Québec City from May 6th to 9th.

EMC Signs an Open Letter in Le Devoir
In the last months, some articles and news stories questioned the benefit for consumers of transitioning to electric vehicles for ecological and health reasons. Some even claimed that EVs were more polluting than gasoline-powered cars.

In response to these criticisms, Catherine Kargas and twenty Quebec EV stakeholders signed an open letter in Le Devoir on December 3, 2018. Together, they reiterated that EVs are a part of the solution, while debunking misinformation portrayed by the media.

Accelerating the Transition to ZEVs in Shared an Autonomous Fleets
Without government intervention, shared mobility models are unlikely to result in lower-carbon transport.
Policies, programs, incentives, and charging deployment strategies designed for shared mobility will be needed.

EV Incentives at Centre of BC's Climate Plan
With the CleanBC Climate Plan announced in December, the government of B.C. sets an example for the rest of Canada. By 2030, 30% of all sales of new cars and trucks are expected to be zero-emission vehicles, rising to 100% by 2040 - a win-win situation for the environment and the economy.

As part of the plan, the government is boosting the provincial incentive program for new car buyers by $20 million this year and will look at expanding the program over time.

Record Results for InnovÉÉ's Call for Proposals
During its last call for proposals, InnovÉÉ received 10 proposals for a total value of $14,3 million. InnovÉÉ approved a total of $3,097,459 in funding to the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), the Université de Sherbrooke, the Université de Montréal, Nergica, the Innovative Vehicle Institute and National Research Council Canada to carry out new collaborative R&D projects in electric and smart transport, and in generation, transmission and distribution sectors.

This brings the total of early-stage, ongoing, and completed projects to 45, with more than $11 million in funding allocated by InnovÉÉ to this day.

Survey: Consumers keen on EV purchases, though cost remains a barrier
Even though EV adoption remains relatively low, new survey from consultants McKinsey & Company shows  half of respondents would consider buying a battery electric or hybrid vehicle for their next car. Cost remains a major concern, with more than 60% of those surveyed saying they wouldn't pay a premium for an EV.
