Our enchanted evening Under the Sea is this Saturday! The sanctuary is filling up with festive fish, sparkling shells, a sunken ship, and countless wonderful treasures that will be available for bid. Get Your Ticket - there are a few left so drop Chris Kortlandt a line ([email protected]). Get Involved - drop in to lend a hand in the sanctuary or kitchen on Fri Nov 2 starting at 10:00am, and in the kitchen Sat Nov 3 from 10:00am-2:00pm. Dress Up - Come as your favorite sea creature or nautical character or come as you are. Either way, join us! We have great new items up for bid - including theater tickets, sports seats, entertainment packages, cultural memberships, and artwork. There is something for every taste, interest, and wallet! In April 2018, the Equal Justice Initiative Peace and Justice Summit was held in Montgomery, AL, to accompany the opening of EJI's Legacy Museum and Memorial to victims of lynching. A panel of presenters led by Adine Usher will discuss the public and personal impact of their visit. Hosted by the CUUC Racial Justice Team.

Share the Plate for November: Ecumenical Food Pantry
The recipient of half our non-pledge collection is the Ecumenical Emergency Food Pantry of White Plains. The pantry was founded in 1979 by CUUC and four other local congregations as a temporary response to individuals with food insecurity, but found that the need never vanished - it just increased. Today the pantry is a massive effort, operating 51 weeks a year supplying nutritious food to about 400 families a month with support from several congregations across faith traditions. CUUC has continuously assisted in this effort with both funds and volunteers including members Vicky Van Wert and Lucille Ross, who worked tirelessly at the pantry for many years

My theology of prayer is not that some external person-like (i.e., having beliefs and desires) hears prayers and takes them into account when deciding events. It's true that I do address my prayers to something -- I address them to the ground of being, or the source of healing and wholeness we call by many names, or the spirit of love, or the community-forming power. It's also true that I address these addressees as if they were person-like. As if. But I do this because orienting myself as if I were addressing a person signals to my ultra-social brain that I'm saying something I want to be important to me. In prayer, I express my gratitudes and my hopes, and thereby orient myself. Prayer is the way I remind myself of how I want to live.
Voting works the same way. It's like prayer. Indeed, a vote IS a prayer. I don't do it because it "makes a difference" - the chances that any candidate I vote for will win by one vote are vanishingly tiny. I vote, as I pray, as a way of expressing to myself the values I hope to live by.
Both prayer and voting also have the effect of making me feel a part of something bigger than myself - that I am held in a relationship of accountability and responsibility. These are the relations in and through which our lives have meaning.
