Professional Development for BOA Teachers
Teachers at Blue Oak Academy enjoyed two days of training with language arts master teacher Nancy Fetzer
on September 17th and 18th. Mrs. Fetzer taught BOA teachers a variety of strategies to help emerging and developing readers and writers. Teachers are excited to add many of the techniques she shared to their toolboxes of teaching skills. Above, Mrs.

Fun phonics fact: Did you know there are 44 individual sounds made from 26 letters in the English language? There are 222 different spellings for those 44 sounds!

Big News!
It has been a long time coming and we are so happy to announce that t
he SVA Library is now open! Many hours of time, loads of staff energy, and a whole lot of love have gone into this library; not to mention the generous gift of the Reniers family which provided the books. Join us in celebrating the opening of this wonderful resource for our students. If you see our resident librarian, Amanda Harris, please give her a pat on the back!

Blue Oak Beautification Day
Volunteers needed!
Come on out to help spruce up our space on
Saturday, September 29 @ 8:00AM. We will be completing a variety of small projects to make a BIG impact on our campus. Bring your paintbrush, shovel, rake, wheelbarrow or other tools and come lend a hand!
Projects Include:
- Install exterior bulletin board
- Plant shrubs and flowers
- Mulch planters
- Paint interior of student restrooms
- Plot baseball diamond and soccer field
- Repair basketball goals
- Install sign holders

SVA 5th/6th PBL Launch
Josh McDonnell, Community and Economic Development Director for the City of Tulare (and former City of Visalia Planner), came to the 5/6 wing to launch the Trimester 1 PBL, "Youville." He discussed how an urban planner develops a city, and the strategies for placement of schools, parks, churches, neighborhoods, roads, and commercial spaces. Each student received a color-coded map of Visalia to use as a reference.
Students will use what they know about ancient civilizations and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to create their own civilizations as they seek to answer the Essential Question:
How do people's needs impact the development of a civilization?

BOA 1st/2nd PBL Launch
This week, BOA launched their first PBL project of the year. College of the Sequoias Professor of Anthropology, Dr. Marla Prochnow, challenged our students to become cultural anthropologists by teaching them how to think like an anthropologist. She brought in artifacts from around the world and had students ponder what these artifacts were made from and what their use may be.
In the next few weeks, students will continue to explore deeper by visiting with several presenters from around the world, and learning through reading and listening to find out how to answer their driving question:
How can we teach others about different places in the world? Students will have the choice of project presentation (a book, a suitcase, or a travel brochure) and they will be able to share with YOU how we can teach others about different places in the world. The 1st/2nd grade team is looking forward to the learning that will come through this project!

Middle School Service Learning
Our SVA 7th & 8th graders provided a service to the community at Burris Park in Hanford for Senior Day. Students visited, played games, and even danced with their new senior citizen friends.

Operation Chromebook
The 5th & 6th Grade teaching team has been hard at work pounding the pavement to raise money for the purchase of Chromebooks for their students. So far, they are over halfway to their goal of $23,000!
A HUGE thank you goes out to the donors who have already put a whole class set of Chromebooks into the hands of our kids:
