THIS WEEK

November 4-10

Daylight Saving Time ENDS This Sunday!
Sunday, November 4 | 2 AM
Don't forget to turn back your clock one hour ("fall back") before you go to sleep on Saturday so that you will not be an hour early for Sunday school and/or worship!

Deacons' Special Offering
Sunday, November 4
This month's special offering will go to the PCA Women's Love Offering. This offering goes to a ministry that is selected each year by the PCA Women's Ministry. This year, they have chosen an investment in CHERISH: A Ministry of Care and Nurture for Pastor's Wives. The 2018 Love Gift provides PCA churches a practical way to cherish pastors' wives with the nurture and support they've requested, affordable access to confidential Christian counseling. Thanks to your generosity, PCA pastors' wives will have access to someone outside their church with whom they can fully and honestly process life and ministry. For more information, go to 2018lovegift.com.

Advent Choir
Do you enjoy singing Christmas worship music? If so, you are invited to join the choir for the upcoming Advent season. We will hold two special rehearsals on November 4 and 11 from 3:30-5:30 PM. Please contact Liz McNulty to set up a quick, informal vocal check.

GriefShare: Surviving the Holidays
Tuesday, November 6 | 7 PM
For those who are grieving a loved one's death during this season, we are hosting a GriefShare seminar, "Surviving the Holidays," in WC, room 211. You'll learn how to deal with the many emotions you'll face during the holidays, what to do about traditions and other coming changes, helpful tips for surviving social events, and how to discover hope for your future. The cost is $10 for the workbook. For more details,  contact Mary Jo Culver or go to griefshare.org/holidays.

HIGHLIGHTS

 Upcoming Events

21-Gun Salute at Matthews
Sunday, November 11 | 12 PM
This Veterans Day, November 11, marks the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI. World War I ended at 11 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 ... exactly 100 years ago this Veterans Day.

On this day, American Legion Post 235 from the Town of Matthews will have a graveside memorial ceremony in the Old Matthews Cemetery, with a 21-gun salute recognizing the end of WWI, the local veterans who served in WWI, and Pvt. Grady Hooks and Pvt. Joseph Orr of Matthews who were killed in action in the Great War.

Many young men entered service from Mecklenburg County, including several from the Matthews area.

Two of those local boys were Private Joseph Lee Orr, United States Marine Corps and Private Grady Bost Hooks, United States Army.  Both Pvt. Orr and Pvt. Hooks are buried in the Old Matthews Cemetery.
  • Private Joseph Lee Orr became the first American soldier from the greater Charlotte area (and perhaps the state) to be killed in combat ... 9 June 1918.
  • Private Grady Bost Hooks became the last American soldier from our area (and perhaps the state) to be killed in combat...just minutes before the cease fire that ended the war...11 November 1918.
Neither Pvt. Orr nor Pvt. Hooks had yet married before their tragic early deaths so there were no children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren to remember them or their heroism. There has been no one to tend to their lonely graves many of these past 100 years, nor to remember that they ever lived at all.  The American Legion will remember Pvts Orr and Hooks.

We wanted you to know the story behind this ceremony but also make you aware that you may hear gunshots from the salute after church next Sunday.

Caring for the Orphan (and Other Vulnerable Children): A Lunch Gathering to Connect, Learn and Pray
Sunday, November 11 | 12:30 PM
Do you have a burden for children in vulnerable situations? Have you ever wondered if anyone else here does? Have you been looking for support or encouragement in your commitment to care for the fatherless? Or just wondered how to take the first step? Please join us for an informal but important lunch in the CLC (rooms 1 & 2) on Sunday, November 11, after the morning worship service. We hope to identify interest, build connections, share ideas and spend some time in prayer together as we seek to better understand where we are and how we might grow as a church in faithfully practicing "pure and undefiled religion" (James 1:27) through adoption, foster care, mentoring, supporting those who do, etc. Lunch is provided. Please RSVP to Dave Baxter.

2018 Celebration Service
Sunday, November 18
On November 18, during our 6pm worship service, we will praise the goodness of God and His work in and through this congregation during the last year. We will have copies of the 2018 Annual Report available that morning in the lobbies, and you can view it on the News webpage by Saturday, November 17. Please plan to join us for this time of encouragement for our church family

Children's Birthday Party for Jesus
Saturday, December 8 | 10 AM - noon
Our annual outreach event for children ages 3 to 5th grade will be Saturday, December 8, in our Community Life Center. This event will help our families share the true meaning of Christmas in a fun and inviting way. Join us for a special story time, songs, crafts, games, face painting, balloon animals, and cookies to decorate! Everything is free! Bring your friends, family, and neighbors. For details, contact Lindey Duncklee.

 Information

Kevin DeYoung's New Book
Kevin's book  The Ten Commandments: What They Mean, Why They Matter, and Why We Should Obey Them has just come out. Several copies of this book are available at the Book Nook in our lobby or you can purchase it at Crossway, Amazon, and other online retailers. Here is a brief description:

Are the 10 Commandments still relevant today? Do they still apply? Which ones? What do they mean in light of God's mercy revealed in Jesus? Highlighting the timelessness and goodness of God's commands, Pastor Kevin DeYoung delivers critical truth about the 10 Commandments as he makes clear what they are, why we should know them, and how to apply them. This book will help you understand, obey, and delight in God's law - commandments that expose our sinfulness and reveal the glories of God's grace to us in Christ.

Member Directory
We are organizing a printed member directory as a guide for congregational prayer, a convenient way to match names to faces, and an aide for communication. It will provide limited information such as your name, a recent photo, email address, preferred phone number and a list of children and their ages. If there are reasons that would restrict your participation in this directory, please contact Missy Evans at 704-814-1007 or [email protected] by Friday, November 30, to opt out.
