Orphan Finds New Family with Help from FAR's Children's Center

A few months ago eight-year-old Syuzi found a new home in a foster family when Anichka Grigoryan, 46, a mother of four and a grandmother of four, decided to open her heart to another child. "It was my wish and desire to take care of another kid so that she could be raised in a real family," Anichka explained. Before moving in with the family, Syuzi lived at Vanadzor Orphanage.

The FAR Children's Center, which helped to establish Armenia's foster care system beginning in 2005, helped to facilitate the foster family process for Anichka. As part of its latest project aimed at assisting children from orphanages, the Center has placed a total of 12 children in foster homes since the start of the year, another of them also being Syuzi's brother, Sevak, 10.

FEAST OF THE ARCHANGELS GABRIEL AND MICHAEL AND ALL
THE HEAVENLY HOSTS

On November 10 the Armenian Church celebrates the Feast of the Archangels Gabriel and Michael and All the Heavenly Hosts. According to the Angelology of the Armenian Church the angels are fleshless, spiritual, independent, always moving, immortal creatures and God's servants. According to the Church Fathers, the angels, as luminous creatures, have been created the first day of creation, together with the light. By God's order they are servants, they have been created to serve the human being. Therefore, they are servants who despite being celestial, participate in the earthly life, act together with the human being living in time and space. The angels are called the messengers and agents of God, who realize God's will. According to Dionysius of Areopagus (Areopagite), there are nine orders of angels - Angels, Archangels, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Dominations, Throne, Cherubim and Seraphim.

Archangel Gabriel, whose name means "God's man", is God's direct servant, who is granted the grace to evangelize the Lord's mysteries. It was Archangel Gabriel, who was sent by the Lord to bring the good news to the Virgin about the birth of the Savior, and to Zechariah - to bring the good news about the birth of John the Baptist.

Archangel Michael, whose name means "Who is like God?", is the advocate for the Heavenly King's glory and His people's protector, who is granted the virtue to govern and rule. The name of Archangel Michael is mentioned in the Holy Scriptures four times (The Book of Daniel,10:13, 12:1, The Letter from Jude 1:9, The Revelation to John 11:7).

On Sunday, October 28, the Parish Council of St. Mary Church and the Knights and Daughters of Vartan organized a joint farewell reception in honor of outgoing the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Armenia, Hon. Gregory Hovhannisian.

Welcoming remarks were made by the Parish Council Chairman Miss Sarin Zenian, who welcomed the Ambassador and his family, as well as the diplomatic corps and the community members.

The commander of the Knights of Vartan, Mr. Kevork Marashlian in his remarks thanked the Ambassador for his service to the Armenian nation and wished him success in the future service to our people and country.

Rev. Fr. Hovsep Karapetian, Pastor of St. Mary Church spoke about the dedication, love and professionalism of Mr. Hovhannissian, and the great impact that he had during his tenure as the Ambassador of Armenian in the US.
The evening was concluded by delicious hors d'oeuvres and loving fellowship as the members of the community expressed their appreciation and best wishes to the Ambassador and his family who for the last three years have become familiar faces to many on Sundays and during other community events and functions.

Avedis Hadjian's Secret Nation to be Presented at St. Mary

One of the important publications on contemporary Armenian issues this year is Secret Nation: The Hidden Armenians of Turkey, by Avedis Hadjian, released by I. B. Tauris a few months ago. The widely reviewed book, characterized in the Times Literary Supplement as "intrepid, eccentric and grimly fascinating," is the result of a painstaking investigation that took the author, a freelance journalist, to seek the traces of Islamized Armenians throughout towns and villages of Anatolia and Western Armenia, record stories of survival and discovery, and condense his findings into an absorbing account.

Avedis Hadjian will present Secret Nation at St. Mary on November 4, at 1:00 pm.  The author has worked for CNN and Bloomberg News, among others, and his writing in English and Spanish has appeared in major international news outlets. His work as a correspondent has taken him to Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, China, the Caucasus, Turkey, and Latin America.   Avedis Hadjian has travelled to the towns and villages once densely populated by Armenians, recording stories of survival and discovery from those who remain in a region that is deemed unsafe for the people who once lived there.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

Honoring the Victims of the Pittsburgh Synagogue Massacre

United in a Higher Vision

In the wake of the terrible massacre at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, PA, prominent New York religious leaders gathered for an interfaith prayer service at Manhattan's venerable Park East Synagogue on Wednesday, October 31.

Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan joined Roman Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan, Greek Orthodox Archbishop Demetrios, and others at the invitation of Rabbi Arthur Schneier, Senior Rabbi of Park East Synagogue and president of the Appeal of Conscience Foundation.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the Vatican's Observer to the UN Archbishop Bernardito Auza also attended and spoke in a show of solidarity with the city's religious, diplomatic, and elected officials. A congregant of the Tree of Life Synagogue, Lauren Myer, was also present.

In Fr. Findikyan's touching remarks, the Primate extolled the spirit of unity among all godly people. "Despite the very visible differences among us in our approaches to faith, we are united in a vision for humanity that is so much more exalted than what we see around us in recent times," he said.

He added: "We must inspire our congregations, and our fellow citizens, to a higher vision of humanity."

Enthronement Anniversary of Catholicos Karekin II

This weekend marks the 19th anniversary of the consecration and enthronement of His Holiness Karekin II. It was on November 4, 1999, that His Holiness was formally enthroned as the 132nd Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, in a solemn ceremony at the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin in Armenia.

To mark the occasion, Armenian churches across the world will offer prayers for the health and prosperity of the Catholicos. Diocesan Primate the Very Rev. Fr. Daniel Findikyan has directed clergy of the Eastern Diocese to conduct the " Order of Special Prayer for the Catholicos" at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy this Sunday.

May the Lord grant health and long life to our Catholicos.

Heartbroken: On the Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting

"Heartbroken" is the only word that can describe our emotions after this weekend's horrifying massacre of eleven souls at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. For all of us who gain strength from faith in God, who build lives around religious observance in His holy sanctuary, and who draw sustenance from gathering together to sanctify life's passages, this crime was nothing less than a desecration before the eyes of man and God.

Heartbroken is the word to describe our reaction on reading the profiles of the eleven victims: all people in the later stages of life. Two brothers devoted to each other; an elderly couple; a widow; a beloved physician; a woman of 97 years; and the others who all shared a common gentleness, piety, and desire to help others. Our own faithful communities are blessed with people of the same graceful character.

Heartbroken is the emotion we as Armenian Christians share with our Jewish brothers and sisters as, not for the first time, we grieve together over the re-opening of age-old wounds, received when our respective peoples were subjected to persecution and death from those who felt hatred towards our very existence.

Heartbroken is the feeling aroused by the sight of our country's descent into a fractious, contentious public life. Against that ugly reality, we must hope and pray that people of good will can come together-at the very least-in humble, prayerful respect for the dead, and in sympathy with their grieving loved ones.

Whatever else divides Americans at this time, we should be able to affirm with one voice that those eleven gentle souls, gathered in a house of worship on their Sabbath day, surely did not deserve to have their lives ended in terror and violence. Perhaps agreement on that fundamental premise would be the first step to a more humane public discourse. Until then, we must lift our broken-hearted prayers to the risen Lord Jesus Christ, consoled in the knowledge that His heart, too, has been broken.
The "Reverent Beauty" of Armenian Art

"Armenia is a country with so much history it can overwhelm you," wrote critic Jason Farago in the New York Times last week, in a review titled "Reverent Beauty: The Met's Armenia Show Is One for the Ages."

He continued: "This spring we learned its future might be as eventful as its past, which makes it a timely moment for 'Armenia!,' the Metropolitan Museum of Art's eye-opening appraisal of the art, manuscripts, textiles and religious artifacts of a nation that is still adding surprising chapters to its dramatic history."

17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open. 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them." 19 Now Jesus' mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you." 21 He re-plied, "My mother and brothers are those who hear God's word and put it into prac-tice."
