Few Thoughts 1-18-2019
LOS ANGELES DISTRICT
Greetings on a Wet Winter Week!

I went online to see the totals for Downtown Los Angeles, and this is what I discovered:
Last year’s rain season was the third driest in its recorded history at 4.79 inches. However, this year, it appears that things are much different. Our rain season begins in July, though we hardly ever see rain until October or November. But from July – December we’ve (Downtown) received 4.26 inches and in these first three weeks of January we have already received 4.94 inches, giving us a total so far of 9.20 inches as of 11:26AM, Thursday, January 17, 2019.

My mom would religiously check her rain gauge when she was living in the jungle. A dry year, where we lived, would be around 140 inches but could sometimes grow to 200 and more.  THAT is rain! It is fun to measure the rainfall. So we thank the Lord for this wonderful provision of His in a time when water is what we are much in need of.
Thank you, Jesus!
ENCOURAGEMENT:   ”You are the light of the world. A town built up on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”   (Matthew 5:14-16)

I love looking at lights. Christmas time is always special for our family as we always take the time to go looking around town to see the great Christmas Lights and decorations. There’s nothing more awesome than being in the mountains on a crystal clear night and looking into the skies to see the billions of stars, planets, and moon. When a storm passes in the jungle, and the clouds disappear, it seems the night life just comes alive with brightness.

Sunlight brings life! Have you ever observed the sunflower how it follows the sun as it crawls across the sky? That flower blossom follows the sun all the way to its sunset. The flower gathers its energy from the sun, just as we gather our energy from the Son. A candle, or a lantern, will bring enough light to make your way around a darkened room. The ambient light from a town, or a large city can be seen for miles.

During the winter months I do most of my running while it is still dark outside. Most of my running begins at 5:00AM, and as you are aware, the sun doesn’t come up until well after 6:00 in our area. So, I wear a headlamp on my forehead for two reasons. These two reasons are a result of problems I have encountered before, and not just once, but several times.
1.       Several years ago while running, I never saw the cyclist coming my way… and he never saw me. We smacked right into each other, headlong, and I bruised my right shoulder while he went crashing to the pavement.
2.       The second reason is that I have taken too many falls, stumbling over object in the running path, scraping up my hands, legs, and arms.

Today, I run with a headlamp to be seen, and to see. God has informed us to dress ourselves with the Son who is the Light of the World, so as to be seen, and when we are consumed with The Light, we are to shine so that others may see us as well. Are you bright for Him?
Around the District:
Bishop : This last Sunday morning I rose early, following the Saturday rain, with beautiful blue skies for my drive up to Bishop for worship and the opportunity to share the Word. Thank you, Pastors Les Smith and Eddie Davis, along with your team of leaders for all that is happening up on the northern end of our district. So many great things are happening there, and if anyone is ever on their way up to Mammoth for some skiing or camping in the Sierras, I would encourage you to drop in on the Bishop Church on a Sunday morning. They would love to have you.
Hollywood Children of the Shepherd:  I mentioned in last week’s Few Thoughts that I have registered to run in the LA Marathon for Hollywood Children of the Shepherd. If any of you would like to sponsor me, 100% of all monies raised will go towards this ministry. Checks can be made payable to “L.A. District Church of the Nazarene”. Thank you, Pastor Mike and Barbara Vasquez for all that you do for the kingdom!
NMI  CELEBRATE  DAY:  Last Saturday we enjoyed a wonderful day  CELEBRATING  Nazarene Missions International in Camarillo. Thank you, Debra Hamrick, along with your NMI Council, for providing an awesome day in missions celebration. Thank you Pastor James O’Connell and your team of leaders for hosting this day under rainy conditions. There were so many artifacts and foods from around the world, along with testimonies of the Holy Spirit’s movement through the efforts of His people. To cap it all off, we even had a piñata where the kids had fun beating it up until they were showered with candy!
