Shakeology of the Month
PEPPERMINT CHOCOLATE SHAKEOLOGY
It tastes like dessert, but acts like a multivitamin!

Why Shakeology?
We all struggle with food prep and getting all the nutrients we need in life every day. Shakeology solves both of those problems.  It literally fills the gaps in our daily nutrition. We still advocate eating clean, colorful, whole foods for your daily meals. Shakeology is a multivitamin in a meal.

It is quick, convenient and filled with vitamins, minerals, superfoods, probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, amino acids, antioxidants and protein. It is NOT a diet shake or a quick fix. It is whole food nutrition.

Need Shakeology at home for YOUR family? FREE shaker cup with purchase!

CHICKEN CHILI GRAIN BOWL
Grain bowls are easy to assemble delivery systems for super heathful ingredients that satisfy and sate.  Enjoy this version with chicken, avocado, sweet potato, cilantro and spinach.

Ingredients:
-1 lbs boiled chicken breast, shredded
- 2 cups brown rice or other whole grain (farro, hard wheat barries, barley)
-1 canned package of green chilis
-1 can of white beans, drained and rinsed
-1 cup roasted butternut squash
-1/4 Cotija, crumbled
-1/2 cup cilantro leaves, fresh
-1 avocado, sliced
-2 cups baby spinach, chopped coarsely
Method:
Cook the grain according to package directions.  Meanwhile, combine the shredded chicken, green chilis and white beans in a small pot.  Add 1/2 cup of broth or water and heat over medium heat, for about 5 minutes.  When the grain is finished cooking, layer your bowl with 1 cup of grain, 3/4 cup of the chicken and bean mixture, 1 cup of sliced spinach, 1/2 the avocado, half of Cotija , cilantro leaves and butternut squash.  This recipe serves two people.
Tip: for such a small quantity of butternut squash, check out the freezer section for cubed butternut sqaush instead of the fresh variety which will make many cups.

A Happier, Healthier Community

Living healthy is hard.
It takes thought, planning and commitment.
It takes prioritizing exercise and preparing healthier food at home.
It takes getting up earlier or getting off the couch to move.
It takes avoiding or cutting back on convenient, fast foods.
It takes telling people that your health is a priority.
It takes choosing your time more wisely.

Living unhealthy is harder.
Although it might feel easier in the moment to sit, to eat out of the drive thru, to take a pill, it's simply not.
Living sedentary and eating unhealthy leads to living overweight, stressed, sick, on medications, without energy or with health issues.

At Bay Athletic Club, we've spent nearly 14 years helping our community find fitness as a way of life. We believe in it.

Each fall, we host a community weight loss competition to help people recommit, have fun, set new habits and get results. Our Thinner Winner program just celebrated our 10th anniversary. It's been a staple at our club and in our community and really helps people rally together. It is built around teams and accountability and support and prizes.

It works. The proof is in the numbers and the smiles. Nearly 200 people contributed to our 1,219 inches and 1,338 weight loss.

We had dozens of people in our "10-10" club, having lost 10 pounds and 10 inches.
We had dozens of people take the stage and tell us that they don't struggle to get out of bed, they feel happier, their clothes fit better and they are living a better life.

What better way for Alpena to roll into the holiday season.
Lighter, leaner, happier.
CHEERS!

TIPS FROM NUTRITION EDUCATOR AMANDA FREELAND
It is that time of year.   Everyone is hustling and bustling to make sure the holidays go well for their friends and family.
We will be shopping and decorating and enjoying time together. Yet, the thing that will help keep us feeling our best during all of these fun activities is focusing on our nutrition.

The holidays are one of the toughest times of the year for many people when it comes to nutrition. We are eating excess sugar, we are overeating and eating leftovers and we are attending more parties, social outings and holiday events which all entice us with treats and holiday favorites.

With everything going on, stress also plays a huge role in whether or not we get sick or feel worn down. To keep our stress lower and to help us to feel our best for the holidays we should be focusing on keeping our nutrition a top priority.
Here are a few helpful tips to follow during the holiday season
1. Scan the room: Check out everything that is available and be mindful about choosing what you are going to eat before you start snacking
2. Don't skip breakfast: Fill up on a healthy breakfast so you don't overeat later on.
3. Don't eat until you are uncomfortably stuffed: Your body and organs become stressed at a cellular level, and your organs cannot function as well, when we eat an excessive amount of food. Choose your portions wisely and go back for seconds, after waiting 30 minutes, if you are still hungry.
4. Bring a healthy side dish so you know you have at least one healthy option available if you're not sure what is being served.
5. Enjoy traditions, like my annual cookie making day, but be mindful about how much you are putting in your mouth. Take notes and track what you eat to help you stay focused that day.
6. Make some simple swaps:
  • Choose crunchy veggies with hummus instead of chips, crackers or pretzels with dips or cheese
  • Choose water most and drink a glass of water between other types of beverages
  • Choose one dessert, or two half portions instead of eating all of the desserts
  • Choose wheat bread products over white bread products
Enjoy your holidays without feeling bloated and without gaining the 5-10 pounds that people gain on average each year between Thanksgiving and New Years, by choosing to focus on your nutrition this year.

TAKE ACTION OVER YOUR NUTRITION:
We offer a 3-pack of personal training for $95. You can mix and match your sessions to include personal training for fitness and/or nutrition coaching with Amanda. Email [email protected] to get started.
