The movement of major growing areas from California to points as far south as Yuma, Arizona is underway, and will continue through early December. During this time, certain crops are more susceptible to disruptions in supply and quality.

ATTN SCHOOLS!  APPLES

As each supplier wraps up their harvesting of apples in the Northwest, there is already some distinct scenarios playing out. First of all the overall crop will be down 20 million cartons from last year. The late estimates are in the 115 million carton range. This season there will be limited supplies of small fruit such as sizing in the 125ct and smaller. There will be heavier supplies in the 113ct range or higher. This is due to the natural course of growth in apples called alternate bearing. (Alternate bearing refers to the tendency of the entire tree to produce a greater than average crop one year, and a lower than average crop the following year.)

 

ALERT! AVOCADOS

A short harvest labor strike in Mexico will slow imports to the U.S. for the next week or two. Pricing may increase slightly, however the primary concern is a temporary shortage of fully ripened product. Please consider this ripening issue when planning orders.
