Historic winter storms shut down pretty much everything last week. So Valley Lutheran students are celebrating Lutheran School Week this week.
Devotion
Psalm 86:5: For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you

Winter is officially upon us! If the sub-zero temperatures and snow days didn't let you know, the short cloudy days certainly did. In this season, we all tend to feel cooped up inside of our own homes. Five snow days in a row might have been almost too much for your family to handle. The weather outside is gray and our relationships with each other may feel the same. We bicker and nit-pick more than usual. We can be short-tempered and argumentative with those close to us. We are confronted with the sin in our lives and how it affects our relationships. Where do we turn? God is "good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon Him" He is our light and our salvation in the gray days of winter. He promises to be with us and to love us, no matter what! When sin has wreaked havoc in our lives, we turn to God for forgiveness and love. Through His everlasting love, we know that spring will come again, and with it, new life and hope!

Gracious Heavenly Father,
Thank you for forgiving us and loving us in all circumstances. Help us to share that love and forgiveness with others around us in this winter season. Send your Holy Spirit to guide us and make us your lights in this cold, gray world. In Jesus' name, Amen.

February 11th Assembly Information
On Monday, Feb. 11th, our students will have the opportunity to hear a presentation from Bethany Bauman, a sexual assault survivor, and advocate. A former collegiate gymnast and a graduate of Heritage High School, Bethany is a daughter, sister, mother, and wife. She is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and an advocate for other survivors. After 15 years of silence, with help from her family, friends, and fellow sister survivors, Bethany found the strength to speak out against her abuser, Larry Nassar, and put him away for life. In going public with her story, she hopes to educate others and change the culture of sexual abuse, going forward.

We understand that this topic may be sensitive for some students. Bethany has shared that she "does not go into too much graphic detail" and "understands this can be a sensitive subject for teens". If for any reason, you do not want your student present for this assembly, they may report directly to the office instead for quiet work time. Counselors from the Saginaw Sexual Assault Center will be on hand during the event in case a student would need to speak to someone privately. Parents are also invited to hear Bethany speak either during the day at Valley Lutheran (9:30 - 10:10 am) or in the evening (6:30 - 8:00 pm) at Heritage High School in the auditorium.
Remind Service and Verizon Update
Just before the January 28th deadline, Remind and Verizon were able to come to an agreement that allowed Verzion customers to still receive text messages from Remind. We appreciate your flexibility and are pleased that you will still be able to receive messages in the manner most convenient for you and your family, regardless of your wireless carrier.

PSAT & SAT TESTING
Just as a reminder, all freshmen and sophomores will take the PSAT as part of the State of Michigan testing on April 9th. All juniors will take the SAT with Essay on April 9th as well as part of the official Michigan Merit Exam. The State of Michigan covers the cost of this day of exams and the school takes care of registering all students for the exam on April 9th.

SHOULD MY STUDENT BE TAKING THE SAT/ACT?
Students typically take these exams during the second half of their junior year or the first half of their senior year. As indicated above, all students receive one free SAT with Essay during their junior year. Many students will take the exam more than one time to try to improve their score for admissions and scholarships. Links to register for these exams are below. Need help deciding which test to take?

7TH SEMESTER or MID-YEAR TRANSCRIPTS
Transcripts that include your student's first semester of their senior year will be available once grades are released. Some colleges request these as an update on their applicants. VLHS uses a program called Parchment to send documents electronically and securely directly from the school. Please submit all document requests through Parchment.

NEED YOUR TRANSCRIPT OR TEST SCORES FOR SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS?
Seniors can email Mrs. Mueller from their VLHS email accounts and request a PDF copy of their documents. As a reminder, these can only be released directly to the students via their school email accounts in order to protect the sensitive information contained in the documents.

SCHOLARSHIP RESOURCES
Seniors, don't forget about the list of scholarship resources at http://bit.ly/VLScholarships. Scholarships will start to come in frequently, and this list will be updated.
