Special Visit from Mayor Marty Walsh
On December 10, 2018 Boston Mayor Marty Walsh was our special guest reader at the Condon Elementary School, after d
eclaring November 11-17, 2018 Literacy Week in the City of Boston. He read the story The Magician's Hat by Malcolm Mitchell to a group of third grade students. After reading he stayed for a discussion with the students where they talked about their dreams for the future and his job as the Mayor. Thank you to Mayor Walsh for sharing his time with us and for his commitment to children's literacy!

Planning for Trivia Night
The Greater Boston Read to a Child team is planning the much anticipated Team Trivia Night. On
Thursday, May 2, teams will bring their best-thinking and strategy to compete for the coveted Trivia Championship Cup!
Read to a Child's Annual Team Trivia Night features an exciting and competitive game of team trivia. In a company vs. company competition, teams of up to eight vie for the Trivia Championship Cup, all while supporting children's literacy in Greater Boston. Our Greater Hartford Region Featured in Local Press
Hartford FOX 61 Morning News featured Read to a Child
on the December 27, 2018 "Coffee Cup Salute" segment which highlights nonprofits in Connecticut. Anchor Erika Arias, who visited our Lunchtime Reading Program in 2017, noted the importance of fostering a love of reading in young children. Here's a clip of the segment.

Additionally, Tom Letendre, a volunteer reader from Hartford Steam Boiler, spoke about the Lunchtime Reading Program in a video posted on his employer's website. Tom said, "I read to a first grader, when she walks in the room and I see her face light up...there's nothing like that feeling!"
A Busy Beginning to 2019
With the start of the new year, we renewed our commitment to bring the Lunchtime Reading Program to more underserved Greater Hartford students. Mid-year volunteer recruitment sessions, including a "Lunch and Learn" at Hartford City Hall, are taking place. A "Mix and Mingle" event for those interested in learning more about the Lunchtime Reading Program is set for January 24 at the Hartford Public Library. Metro Detroit
Growth in Many Directions
Read to a Child Metro Detroit had an exciting kickoff to the 18-19 program year. We are very pleased to announce that we were awarded a
$40,000 grant from United Way for Southeastern Michigan with support from General Motors! The grant will enable us to grow our regional operations and enable more children to participate in the Lunchtime Reading Program in the Metro Detroit area.
We are also expanding our partnership network by engaging volunteers from the Council of Supplier Diversity Professionals (CSPD),
Institute for Supply Management
(ISM),
Microsoft and Priority Health.
Volunteers from these wonderful companies have supported our kick off events and engaged in our book drive. Thanks to their efforts along with the amazing contributions of the student council at Hamilton Elementary School in Troy,
we were able to collect over 500 books to support our program.

Greater Los Angeles
Read to a Child L.A. is starting the new year with exciting news! The Winnick Family Foundation pledged $10,000 over the next two years to support expansion of our program at our new school site, Esperanza Elementary. Foundation president and children's book author, Karen Winnick, is a longtime supporter the Lunchtime Reading Program. We are especially excited that Karen Winnick will once again visit selected LA schools sites this year and read her stories to excited children in our Lunchtime Reading Program.
We are pleased to announce that we recently received a $5,000 grant from the Edward A. and Ai O. Shay Family Foundation to sustain and support expansion of the Lunchtime Reading Program in L.A.
AEG Community Foundation Hosts a Special Event Supporting Read to a Child
The
AEG Community Foundation hosted a Charity Suite Night Dec 27th
at STAPLES Center. Over forty Read to a Child supporters attended this special event where they watched a Los Angeles Kings game from the best seats in the house.
Proceeds from the event benefited the AEG Community Foundation and Read to a Child. Guests enjoyed hosted food and beverage while enjoying the best view in the house from the AEG suite! A special thank you to Erikk Aldridge, AEG Community Foundation, for hosting the event. Erikk and fellow AEG volunteers read at the Tenth Street Elementary School.

Miami's book carts are getting an infusion of new titles!
Thanks to our generous donors, we were able to bring some awesome, brand new titles onto our Miami book carts. Take a look at some of our favorite 2018 titles
