Reminder: March 1st schedule change!

Please help us spread the word!  March 1st we were scheduled for a late arrival, but that is being changed to an early dismissal. That is the same day we are hosting the SW Ohio District Wrestling Tournament in our WHS Gym. Between 1 PM and 3 PM 2000-3000 fans, as well as 225 Wrestlers and Coaches, will be arriving for the 2 day event.

To avoid the traffic jam and problems getting buses and kids out after school, we will be changing the 2 hour late arrival to an early dismissal. Schools will start at their regular times. Please help us get the word out to all of our families as the date gets nearer.

DISTRICT-WIDE STAFF TRAINING MAY 10TH

Wilmington City Schools is committed to promoting and implementing school wide systems that effectively provides the best interventions and supports for our students. We all want our students to feel safe and cared for at school. We strive to continually assess our current practices and research the best strategies that help us answer the following questions:
  • How can we establish the best practices in the classroom/bus/playground that create a better sense of responsibility, community, compassion, and communication to prevent misbehavior in the first place?
  • How can we effectively help students impacted by another student's misbehavior?
  • What happens when the discipline/suspension for misbehavior ends?
  • How does a student go back to the classroom and avoid falling into the same pattern of misbehavior?
  • Have we addressed what might be happening in their lives that is prompting the misbehavior?
  • Do our students have an understanding of the harm they caused and their responsibility to repair the damage?
It is important to answer these questions if we want to prevent misbehavior and break the cycle of students repeatedly violating our school code of conduct.

In November, 7 teachers and 3 administrators had an opportunity to participate in a seminar on Restorative Practices in school settings. Our goal is to 1) prevent misbehavior, bullying, intimidation etc.and 2) prevent repeat offenses.

We have the opportunity, through a Safety Grant from the State, to hold District-wide staff development on Restorative Practices in a school setting. The grant money comes with a stipulation that it is to be used in this school year.

In order to accomplish this district-wide staff training in the time allotted by the State, our WCS Board of Education has approved closing school on May 10th so that our entire WCS staff can participate in this training. We are excited to learn more about this process and feel that it will compliment our current Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) and Trauma Informed Care practices, to provide a more comprehensive behavior plan that establishes and maintains a safe and productive learning environment.

We thank you for your support and understanding that will allow our entire staff to receive this important training. This opportunity will be a long term investment in enhancing the school environment for all our students.
