Letter from the President
It is a privilege to write to you all this month as we open our
86th season
here at The Rep, "Toledo's community theatre since 1933". As the 2nd oldest cultural arts institution in Toledo, we have been entertaining, educating, and serving northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan for going on 86 years! When I think about the thousands of people who have been impacted by The Rep over the years, it is truly humbling to have an opportunity to help continue this storied legacy of sharing the thrill and excitement of live theatre with the community. As we raise the curtain on our 86th season, it is an honor to have you here and we thank you for your continued support.
We aim to present the very best in live and local theatre here at The Rep and our 2018-2019 season is no exception. This year we're offering a diverse array of shows with something for everyone: multiple Tony-award winning works, a Pulitzer Prize winner, American classics, contemporary hits, and of course, our holiday tradition,
A Christmas Carol. The season starts with the powerful musical
Fun Home, recipient of multiple accolades, including the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical. Fortunately,
season subscriptions are still available as well, where you can save the most money on tickets.
Beyond our shows, we continue to offer a diverse curriculum of classes and workshops year-round to both
children and
adults. Be sure to check them out if you've never done so before. Expect to see numerous partnerships throughout the year as well, as we continue to collaborate with other organizations in the community. Last but not least, we hope you'll start to notice some changes around the theatre this year as we work to make the necessary repairs, renovations, and improvements that will allow The Rep to continue to be a community leader for years to come.
Thank you again for playing a part in our story and letting us play a part in yours as well; for helping us create a vibrant community through live theatre. We look forward to presenting the high-quality productions and classes you have come to expect while continuing to provide a creative and supportive environment for our local theatre artists.

An Opportunity, and a Challenge...can you help?
For more than 30 years, The Rep has enriched the holiday season
with its lavish and heartwarming annual staging of A Christmas Carol. First
presented at the theatre's 10th Street stage in 1983, then the Peristyle and
the Stranahan Theatre, this historic production has now found the perfect
home in the historic Valentine Theatre, where it has been
performed for many years. For many Toledo children, the school
performances of A Christmas Carol are their first exposure to the magic of
live theatre.
While the years have deepened and improved the show, they have
not been kind to the complicated Christmas Carol stage sets which, every
year, are taken down and taken apart and sent into storage for eleven
months. The process of loading, unloading, setting-up and taking down has
taken a natural toll, as has normal wear and tear. Factor in the occasional
unforeseen bump and bang, and the need for repairs and upgrades
becomes clear. For reasons of safety as well as aesthetics, the entire A
Christmas Carol set needs careful and thoughtful rehabilitation, and that
expense is not within our regular budget.
But with your help, there's a solution; a Christmas miracle, if
you will.
The Rep has received a challenge grant, from The Andersons Fund Supporting Organization of the Toledo Community Foundation. If we
can raise $12,500, they will match it, and Charles Dickens' London will be
reborn, more beautiful (and safer) than ever! Please consider a donation,

OUR PARTNERS!
The mission of the Toledo Repertoire Theatre is to educate, entertain, and serve the Toledo area through live theatre. The Rep is also devoted to giving back to the community that has given so much to us over these past 86 years! As part of that pledge, we regularly join forces with other organizations in order to better serve the needs of our community.
As part of our ongoing outreach initiative, The Rep will be partnering with Harvey House of Northwest Ohio during our production of
FUN HOME. We will be holding a donation drive during the run to collect items for the Harvey House youth. Please see the list below for details. The best part is... they are requesting LBGTQ+ books for their kids!
We hope Alison Bechdel would be proud. They will also be accepting monetary donations for their LGBTQ+ youth at their table in the lobby set up during the September 21 and 22 performances of FUN HOME.
Donations may be dropped off or put in the allocated boxes in our lobby during normal Toledo Rep office hours or during any of our
FUN HOME performances!
HARVEY HOUSE
Harvey House is a drop-in center, community center, and safe space for LGBTQ+ youth and their allies. They are the first and only LGBTQ+ community center in Northwest Ohio.
Harvey House works towards ending youth homelessness in Northwest Ohio by operating a community center for any youth who need a safe, judgement-free zone to spend time. They connect youth with necessary services and provide them with clothing and food.
Visit the Harvey House table set up in our lobby during the September 21 and 22 performances of
FUN HOME! Representatives will be on hand with resource information and to answer any questions you might have about their organization or how you can get involved with Harvey House of Northwest Ohio!

A Christmas Carol is a holiday staple for many families because of you! I am incredibly excited to be working with our wonderfully talented production team as I take the helm of the good ship "God Bless Us... Everyone" for the first time. There will be some changes in the way we approach the show. But still, in the end, it's the classic Dickens' tale of Scrooge's redemption.
Toledo's best-loved and biggest theatrical event returns to the Glass City for its 36th straight year this November, when the Toledo Repertoire Theatre stages the holiday classic
A Christmas Carol.
A Toledo Rep tradition for more than 30 years, this timeless tale of redemption follows Ebenezer Scrooge as he is transformed by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future from a miserly old curmudgeon into a man who embodies the true meaning of Christmas. With lavish costumes, spectacular sets and a musical score rich with carols of the era, this production is one you will not want to miss!

Our Rep Ed program is excited to offer our Fall Adult Improv classes, for ages 18 years or older, beginning October 7th and running through November 11th!

Classes are held in the Toledo Rep's rehearsal space the "Brown Building", situated across the parking lot from our main theatre at 16 10th Street.

Level 1 Improv - Beginner's Introduction to Improv
Improv Level 1 will introduce students to the wonderful unscripted world of playing pretend with other adults. This class will introduce students to the foundations of improv, including the basics of creating that very first scene. Throughout these six weeks, students will learn object work, back-and-forth improv and the lost art of listening.
The course will introduce students to games and experiences designed to let creativity flow freely and foster a dynamic and collaborative environment.
No experience necessary! Come ready to play!
Level 2 Improv - Advanced Improv
In Improv Level 2, individuals who are more experienced with Improv have the opportunity to enhance their object work, scene work and scene creation abilities.
This course will build upon the skills and techniques learned in Level 1 and explore character development. Students will learn how to bring their improv characters to life and experiment with physical comedy.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR!
Paul Fruhwirth
Paul was first bitten by the acting bug when he was only two months old. Once he recovered from the infection, he landed his first starring role as Baby Jesus in his neighborhood holiday pageant at only four months old. Later in life, Paul went on to have a love for the theatre, comedy, improv, sketch writing, and stand-up comedy. Beginning in 2012, Paul pursued a formalized education at The Second City Training Center in Old Town, a small neighborhood in the city of Chicago. Paul graduated from The Second City's Improv Program, the sketch comedy program, the stand-up comedy program, as well as the Writing for Late Night TV program.
While Paul's first passion is the stage, he has learned to expand that love into corporate America. In order to pay for his addiction to gummy bears and in-app purchases, Paul spends his days facilitating training sessions, sales presentations and traveling across the country on the speaking circuit.
Paul has appeared at Zany's Chicago, The Laugh Factory Chicago, The Second City Etc. Stage, and his sketches have appeared in The Second City's Skybox Theater. His mother is an Instructor of Performing Arts in Chicago, and specifically asked to be included in his biography. Paul's cat, "Melrose Place" or "Melly" for short, does not find him funny in the least.

TOLEDO BLADE
"Rep tackles weighty issues with Fun Home"
Fun Home, the Tony Award-winning musical based on the book "Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic", by cartoonist and graphic novelist Alison Bechdel, opens Friday at the Toledo Repertoire Theatre in the first of nine performances.
The musical deals with Bechdel's coming of age as she tries to understand her family, especially her volatile and secretive father, who she learns is gay, and understand her own sexuality.
The story is told through the experiences of three Alisons, said

, The Rep's director. The first, Small Alison, is about 9 years old; but even at that young age she is trying to figure things out and deal with them. Medium Alison is going to college, has her first relationship, and comes out as a lesbian to her parents. The third is Alison in her 40s as she starts to write the book and works through the past, including her father's death.
The musical is very moving, Zatko said. There are strong emotional moments, but there are joyous moments and moments of humor in the story too.
"There's a line in a song, 'Am I falling into nothingness or flying into something so sublime'," Zatko said. "All those situations in your life, you can either decide to let it beat you, or you can fly above it."

THE REP'S FUN HOME CELEBRATES LESBIAN GRAPHIC NOVELIST ALISON BECHDEL"
Toledo loves love- and equality- so it's no surprise that The Toledo Rep chose to debut
Fun Home, the true story of lesbian graphic novelist Alison Bechdel. The musical moves fluidly between past and present, reliving Alison's unique childhood at the family's Bechdel Funeral Home.
Director Julie Zatko disclosed that she has always been a fan of the book and Alison Bechdel's works, which piqued her interest to
direct the musical adaptation. Zatko confesses, "I sometimes find myself at rehearsal overwhelmed by this opportunity that has been given to me, and how lucky I am to be where I am in this moment in time. [Bechdel's] story means so much to me; it means so much to many. No matter your background, you will relate to this story on some level."

THE REP "CRACKS THE CODE"
"Photograph 51" at Imagination Station's Genetics Weekend!
During Imagination Station's "Crack the Code: Genetics Weekend" from August 16-19, the Toledo Rep
provided their life-size 6' tall replica of Crick and Watson's 1953 DNA model that demonstrates one complete turn of DNA's helical structure. This model, along with the x-ray crystallography cameras, including a re
plica of the Phillip's micro-camera, were used during the Toledo Rep's production of PHOTOGRAPH 51, which told the story of scientist Rosalind Franklin and the race to discover the structure of DNA.

On August 11th, the Toledo Rep brought a little piece of Hollywood to Toledo during Thea Grabiec's "Definition of This" movie fundraiser gala!
Guests were a part of this Toledo Native making silver screen history as they arrived in style to a red carpet and a photographer waiting to snap their picture.
Hollywood actress Julie Dolan (Gilmore Girls and the voice of Princess Leia for Disney LucasFilm Projects) flew in from LA to take part in the event.
Thank you to all who took part in this memorable event and supported Thea on her road to silver screen stardom!

The Rep is Looking For Videographer Volunteers!
The Toledo Rep is looking for qualified individuals to perform freelance videography work for our marketing/advertising team. The goal of our marketing department is to strengthen the Toledo Rep brand and to promote all events, programs, classes, productions and outreach initiatives of the Toledo Repertoire Theatre.
As a videography volunteer, you should be prepared to work in an exciting, creative and fast-paced environment. Candidates should have an entrepreneurial mindset for project development and a strong drive to take on challenges. They must be self-motivated, a strong team player, able to think outside the box, and be comfortable taking the lead in facilitating, planning and executing the digital video productions of the Toledo Rep.

Serving on the board of a nonprofit organization is a wonderful, enriching experience and is a fulfilling way in which you can give back to the community that we call home.
Those wishing to serve should have a vested interest in and a strong allegiance to the Toledo Rep and its continuation as a vital part of the cultural fabric of our Toledo community.
The responsibilities for Board and Committee members are different. Due to bylaw guidelines, we have a limited number of Board seats. However, we have many more Committee positions available. If you should have an interest in either area, please complete the online form.

Education is one of the central aspects of our mission here at the Toledo Rep and we are always looking for new instructors to include in our program. If you are interested in being a part of our education program, please let us know! A background in teaching is desired, although not necessarily required. We are looking for people experienced in one or more of the many aspects of theatre, with a passion and desire to share those experiences and skills with others. Our program includes classes, workshops and camps for children, teens and adults.
