Letters of Condolence for Families of the Tree of Life Synagogue Tragedy
We know that many of you are deeply saddened and disturbed by the murder of 11 Jewish people inside their house of worship, the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, last Saturday.

Around Hennepin, our interfaith friendships are gifts for which we are deeply grateful. One friend from neighboring Temple Israel offered this suggestion: “Here’s something you can do: Write a letter to the Tree of Life Synagogue--condolences, support, care, love and hope. Letters might mean something to the survivors, the community, and the families of those killed.”

We hope you will take time to write these letters, and to pass along this invitation to others who may be feeling powerless to change our broken world. Send letters to: Tree of Life Congregation, 5898 Wilkins Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, 15217.

Peace & Justice Messages
Climate Vote
November 6, Precinct Voting Places
Hennepin Church joins other faith communities in committing to care for God’s creation. The United Nations has recently declared, emphatically, that the climate has already changed and will quickly get much worse if we don’t take immediate climate action. The Outreach Team at Hennepin encourages Hennepin members to do their part by voting for candidates in the November 6 election who commit to adopt local, state and national policies to radically reduce carbon emissions as soon as they take office.
Contact Your Elected Officials to Express Opposition to the Deployment of Troops to the U.S.-Mexico Border
The board of directors of the General Board of Church and Society of The United Methodist Church held its most recent meeting October 24-26, in San Antonio, Texas. During that meeting, they focused on the impact of the U.S. government’s zero tolerance policy on migrant families seeking asylum and communities along the U.S.-Mexico border. The following is an excerpt from their public statement regarding this issue:

The United Methodist Church is resolved ‘as followers of Jesus, to work to eliminate racism and violence directed toward newly arriving migrants to the United States.’ Further, we ‘denounce and oppose the rise of xenophobic, racist, and violent reactions against migrants in the United States, and support all efforts to build relationships among people, instead of building walls among diverse ethnicities and cultures.’ (2016 United Methodist Book of Resolutions, 3281 “Welcoming the migrant in the US”).

  • We oppose the decision by the U.S. government to send U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

  • We call on our fellow United Methodists to contact their elected officials and the U.S. Department of Defense to express their opposition to U.S. troop deployment at the U.S.-Mexico border.

  • We call on our fellow United Methodist to prayerfully and peacefully rally, march and protest in solidarity with our brother and sisters seeking asylum and refuge.

  • We call on our fellow United Methodists to bear witness by being present in immigration courts and visiting immigration detention centers.

  • We call on our fellow United Methodists to pray for all those affected and build communities who welcome migrants with compassion and grace.

The General Board of Church and Society is the social justice, advocacy and peace-building arm of The United Methodist Church. To learn more about their work, visit https://www.umcjustice.org.

Share Submissions for the Advent Devotional

Our church's theme for Advent is, Do You Hear What I Hear? Throughout Advent, we will be using the four verses and story of this familiar song to reflect as a congregation on different ways of experiencing God: how we see and hear the presence of God in the world, how we know God in our hearts and minds, and how we pray to God.

How and where do you see God plainly visible in our world, or where does God remains unseen and shrouded in mystery? Where do you hear God's voice speaking to you, and what is it calling you to do? What do you know of God intimately in your heart and mind, and how has that knowledge and awareness changed over time? How and when do you pray to God, and what difference has that made in your life?

You are invited to write a short reflection for our church's Advent devotional booklet about where you see the light of God shining brightly or hear God's voice speaking plainly. Or to describe what you know about the essence of God and how you know it to be true. Or to share a personal experience that led you to pray a prayer that impacted your life deeply.

Your reflection, poem, or prayer of 250 words or less is welcome and is due Monday, November 12, at noon. Send to communications@haumc.org .

Don't Miss Our InterGen Men's Retreat
NEXT WEEKEND, November 10-11, at Koinonia Retreat Center

In her poem, The Summer’s Day , Mary Oliver says: “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church invites the men of our community to a retreat to answer this provocative question. How do we, as men, create lives that are fulfilling and engage our spirits? We will share the wisdom of the elders and be ignited by the passion of those in the earlier stages of their lives and careers. The need for purpose, the need for vision, and the need for loving relationships applies no matter our age. So get ready to be enriched and inspired by meaningful conversations that explore these questions:

  • How can I learn to treasure each and every day?
  • Where will I focus my energy?
  • What do I want to contribute?
  • What do I want to create?
  • To what and whom will I look for inspiration?

Register at haumc.org/register. Cost is $89.

Leading the Conversation: Gun Violence Communications Workshop
November 18, 1:30pm at St. mark's Episcopal Cathedral

Are you uncomfortable talking about gun violence? We have all watched in AWE as students have stepped up to lead the gun violence prevention movement. These young leaders have overnight become articulate and passionate communicators about gun violence and legislation to prevent it. Wish you could speak as knowledgeably as the students? If so, then join us and learn to lead the conversation.
  • Learn how to speak with confidence to anyone about gun violence prevention by attending this workshop, led by Protect Minnesota’s Executive Director Nancy Nord Bence. In the past two years she has presented this information nearly 900 people from across Minnesota. At this interactive event you’ll:
  • Learn how to speak about gun violence as a public health issue–in a way that won’t alienate hunters and responsible gun owners.
  • Learn about legislation that has been PROVEN to decrease gun deaths in other states, and could do the same in Minnesota.
  • Develop your personal 1-minute message to lead the conversation about the need for these important gun bills.
  • Learn the difference between dialogue and debate and important dialogue skills.
  • Learn what messages don’t work–and why.
  • Become informed about opportunities to engage in citizen lobbying at the Capitol.
Many thanks to Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral for hosting this workshop, and their dedicated support of gun violence prevention. This event is appropriate for adults and youth age 12 and older.
Attendance is free, but please register by going to: bit.ly/2qlFa1S .
