, will deliver a keynote address and join a panel of local anti-racism experts to help our community respond to the devastating impact racism has on our nation. We will read and discuss this book as a church in our LYFE Groups and in worship during January, 2019.

Letters of Condolence for Families of the Tree of Life Synagogue Tragedy
|
We know that many of you are deeply saddened and disturbed by the murder of 11 Jewish people inside their house of worship, the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, last Saturday.
Around Hennepin, our interfaith friendships are gifts for which we are deeply grateful. One friend from neighboring Temple Israel offered this suggestion: “Here’s something you can do: Write a letter to the Tree of Life Synagogue--condolences, support, care, love and hope. Letters might mean something to the survivors, the community, and the families of those killed.”

Adulting 101: Improv and Mental Health

Dr. Jim Robinson (Table Salt Productions) will lead a fun, two-hour interactive workshop that helps us leap into the chaos of the moment and embrace the gifts it offers. You'll learn fundamentals of improvisation and discover how these skills can help you become more flexible, empathetic, and courageous. Through dynamic exercises and personal feedback, you'll understand how an improvisational mindset can deepen communication skills, reduce anxiety, reframe negative self-talk, and awaken a sense of play. Hennepin Church joins other faith communities in committing to care for God’s creation. The United Nations has recently declared, emphatically, that the climate has already changed and will quickly get much worse if we don’t take immediate climate action. The Outreach Team at Hennepin encourages Hennepin members to do their part by voting for candidates in the November 6 election who commit to adopt local, state and national policies to radically reduce carbon emissions as soon as they take office.

Contact Your Elected Officials to Express Opposition to the Deployment of Troops to the U.S.-Mexico Border
|
The board of directors of the General Board of Church and Society of The United Methodist Church held its most recent meeting October 24-26, in San Antonio, Texas. During that meeting, they focused on the impact of the U.S. government’s zero tolerance policy on migrant families seeking asylum and communities along the U.S.-Mexico border. The following is an excerpt from their public statement regarding this issue:
The United Methodist Church is resolved ‘as followers of Jesus, to work to eliminate racism and violence directed toward newly arriving migrants to the United States.’ Further, we ‘denounce and oppose the rise of xenophobic, racist, and violent reactions against migrants in the United States, and support all efforts to build relationships among people, instead of building walls among diverse ethnicities and cultures.’ (2016 United Methodist Book of Resolutions, 3281 “Welcoming the migrant in the US”).
- We oppose the decision by the U.S. government to send U.S. troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
- We call on our fellow United Methodists to contact their elected officials and the U.S. Department of Defense to express their opposition to U.S. troop deployment at the U.S.-Mexico border.
- We call on our fellow United Methodist to prayerfully and peacefully rally, march and protest in solidarity with our brother and sisters seeking asylum and refuge.
- We call on our fellow United Methodists to bear witness by being present in immigration courts and visiting immigration detention centers.
- We call on our fellow United Methodists to pray for all those affected and build communities who welcome migrants with compassion and grace.

GOOD NEWS! Out with the OLD – in with the NEW! If you’ve ever turned on a faucet at Koinonia, you may have noticed the pressure wasn’t reliable. Last week, Koinonia staff completed the replacement of the 50-year-old water system, including removal of an enormous holding tank and asbestos-covered pipes.

In December 2017, photographer Kathleen Ambre worked alongside non-profit organization OC Ministries to document outreach projects in the small village of Baiwalla, Sierra Leone. OC Ministries is a mission-centered organization based in Minnesota ministering to the minds, bodies and spirits of children in developing countries. Currently, OC Ministries is collaborating with Rev. Judith Banya, pastor of the Baiwalla UMC, to build a new secondary school for the children in the village.
Kathleen’s photography exhibition titled: “Tenki” (“thank you” in Sierra Leonean Creole, or Krio) showcases the names, faces and stories of the many vibrant children she met in Baiwalla. Learn more about how you can support the mission of OC Ministries at www.ocministries.com.

Singing in the Light

Singing in the oral tradition--just for the joy of it!
We meet occasional Sunday afternoons at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church in Minneapolis.
All ages and all abilities are welcome. No music to read. No performance. Songs, rounds, and chants from around the world--from the sublime to the ridiculous.
Singing in the Light is an ongoing fundraiser for the community work of Mar de Jade Wholistic Lifestyle Center, Chacala, Mexico. This is the retreat center where Barbara and her colleague Margie Weaver lead their Singing and Yoga Retreat. They offer a variety of programs in their community including those that support children, youth, and single mothers.
Suggested donation at the door: $10-$20 (please don't let money keep you away--nobody checks what you give). No need to RSVP - just grab your friends and come.

Purses with a Purpose
Now through November 18
Helen's House, a women’s residence for sober living located across the street from Hennepin Avenue UMC, is asking us to help them spread the gift of giving. Purses with a Purpose is a new project run by the residents of Helen’s House to spread God's love in practical ways to our neighbors in need. The goal is to reach 100 women experiencing homelessness with the gift those daily essentials: a good handbag full of those little items every woman needs. Please reach deep into your hearts and closets and fill a donated purse with these suggested items, then place the purse in the bin in the East Entry:

Care Package Drive for
College Students
November 4-18, in the East Entry
Remind young adults who grew up at Hennepin they're loved by their home church. Please donate items to stuff care packages full of fun! Donate items by Nov. 18 so packages can go out in time for finals. Consider buying in bulk (Costco, online, etc.) to spread the love. Ideas include:
- personal notes of affirmation and encouragement (yes, we take notes to specific young adults!)
- shoebox-sized boxes for shipping
- single-serve hot drink / soup mix (ramen, coffee, hot cocoa, soup, etc.)
- high-protein snacks (nuts, trail mix, beef jerky)
- microwave popcorn and other pre-packaged snacks
- candy, suckers, chocolate, mints, and gum
- cough drops, tissues, wet wipes, chapstick, EmergenC packets, and cold/flu season items
- highlighters, Post-It notes, and other school supplies that would come in handy during finals.

Leading the Conversation: Gun Violence Communications Workshop
November 18, 1:30pm at St. mark's Episcopal Cathedral
Are you uncomfortable talking about gun violence? We have all watched in AWE as students have stepped up to lead the gun violence prevention movement. These young leaders have overnight become articulate and passionate communicators about gun violence and legislation to prevent it. Wish you could speak as knowledgeably as the students? If so, then join us and learn to lead the conversation.
- Learn how to speak with confidence to anyone about gun violence prevention by attending this workshop, led by Protect Minnesota’s Executive Director Nancy Nord Bence. In the past two years she has presented this information nearly 900 people from across Minnesota. At this interactive event you’ll:
- Learn how to speak about gun violence as a public health issue–in a way that won’t alienate hunters and responsible gun owners.
- Learn about legislation that has been PROVEN to decrease gun deaths in other states, and could do the same in Minnesota.
- Develop your personal 1-minute message to lead the conversation about the need for these important gun bills.
- Learn the difference between dialogue and debate and important dialogue skills.
- Learn what messages don’t work–and why.
- Become informed about opportunities to engage in citizen lobbying at the Capitol.
Many thanks to Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral for hosting this workshop, and their dedicated support of gun violence prevention. This event is appropriate for adults and youth age 12 and older.

Digital Citizenship: Media Best Practices for Kids, Preteens, and Families

How early should kids get their first tablet or mobile device? How are parents supposed to keep up with the latest apps kids use? And what does technology have to do with faith?
If you’re trying to keep up with the media landscape, this session is for you! Dr. Dawn Rudman will review current research and walk you through a process to assess how you and your family members can develop digital citizenship so you can develop a framework for deliberate, meaningful media usage informed by your faith. She’ll share fresh ideas and usable tools throughout the session.
Dawn Rundman holds a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology and speaks at churches, conferences, and other events about the intersections between science and faith. Previously a college professor, she now develops faith formation resources at 1517 Media and has developed over 20,000 pages of curriculum and Bibles. Dawn’s new parenting book,
Little Steps, Big Faith: How the Science of Early Childhood Development Can Help You Grow Your Child’s Faith
, is now available wherever books are sold. She lives in Edina with her prom date/husband Jonathan and their two kids.

Thanksgiving Interfaith Worship
November 22, 10am at Westminster Presbyterian Church
Everyone is invited to the Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at Westminster. The service will include scripture from various religious traditions, choral and congregational singing, and a sermon offered by The Rev. Paul Lebens-Englund, Dean of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral.
The 60-minute service will be led by Westminster’s Senior Pastor, The Rev. Dr. Tim Hart-Andersen, and other senior clergy from churches, synagogues, and mosques in or near downtown.
