"Celebrating God's Presence, Serving All People"
United Church News February 10th, 2019
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This Sunday following worship at 10AM, we will dedicate our new steeple and enjoy together a delicious brunch hosted by our Social Events Committee. In recent weeks, I've been reading about the history of steeples. Steeples denote difference. A church with a steeple atop it was originally meant to be a beacon to the rest of the world that the building was "different" or "sacred"--a city on a hill for the world to see. Throughout the centuries, God has called the Church to be different from the rest of the world. On Sunday, I plan to say more about this in a sermon from Matthew 5: 13-16 entitled "Unusual People Beneath the Steeple." Indeed, our faith and love for others makes us unusual from the rest of the world. It is this "unusual" difference to which God has called each of us.

I look forward to being with you Sunday at 8:15AM and 10AM.

In Christ,

Pastor Mark

On Thursday, February 21st,  Mark Beland, of AVOW Hospice, will be with us to instruct us on the document, The FIVE WISHES.
This is an amazing seminar for all people over 18 years of age. This court-ready document will greatly help families, Pastor Mark and our staff with end of life care and funeral preparations. This document should be in place by all adults, should any of us become unable physically or mentally unable to communicate our wishes by a tragedy or illness. It is much more detailed than a living will and should be be attached to primary care doctors patient file and family records. It costs us nothing and you will have a court ready document when you leave.

I have held this seminar 10 times in the last 7 years. For more information click on the button to the right or contact me with any questions.

FEBRUARY IS HABITAT MONTH

GAME ON!

Well, that little skirmish in Atlanta last Sunday night is long over but our Super Bowl of a fundraiser has just begun. As an official sponsor of Habitat’s GIVE TO THE MAX, United Church has pledged to raise $100,000 during February and when we’ve met that pledge it will be matched with an additional $100,000. That’s $200,000 in SUPER BOWL GOLD, enough for United Church to build 4 more Habitat homes this year.

At the kickoff last Sunday, United Church members put $ (Wanda please fill in the amount from Stephen) on the scoreboard. That includes the well played $1050 from the Women’s Fellowship Bake sale and $500 from the UC Crafters who drained their treasury to score for the team. Let’s give them a cheer! I urge you to get geared up and bring your gifts this Sunday. We’re going to need all of you, every player out on the field to reach this goal. Let’s bring home the trophy to Coach Mark. Let’s win this one for all the hardworking families who need us.

On Saturday Feb. 23 we’ll be dedicating the home United Church built last year for the Chavez family. Remegio has worked 16 years for a local plastering company while Jessica is both a homemaker and childcare teacher at the Y. The family has struggled to afford a safe and decent place to raise their 15 year old Isiah and 9 year old Elizabeth. All four had been occupying a single bedroom. Remegio said “ we just want the best for our children...a safe and humble home”.

Please come this Sunday ready to help the next deserving hardworking family. Make your gifts payable to United Church and add HABITAT to the memo line. Stop by the Gridiron poster in the narthex or deposit your gift in the offering plate.

LET’S KEEP BUILDING
