November 1st: ALL SAINTS DAY

Why Pray to Mary and the Saints when I Can Pray Straight to Jesus?

I have a "go to person" that I always ask to pray for me and that is my mother.  Many people ask us seminarians to pray for them and their intentions. It's a common practice to ask other people to pray (or intercede) for us.   (Fun fact: intercede and intercession come from the same root.)

Praying to Mary (the first saint, and Jesus' first disciple) and the other saints is similar to asking a friend or loved one to pray for us.  The difference is that Mary and the saints are in heaven, and are closer to God. Christians on earth may be physically separated from Christians in heaven but we are all connected supernaturally in the Mystical Body of Christ. Revelation 8:3-4 supports that saints pray for us: "... rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God.  James 5:16 says " The prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects," and we are told to  "pray for one another. With this in mind, how greater are the prayers of Mary and saints, the righteous men and women, particularly Mary, who is most blessed among women.
We can also think of the Wedding at Cana story in the bible, Jesus' first public miracle.   Jesus listened and responded to his mother when she asked Him to provide more wine, when she asked him to help the bride and groom.  We can also extend this reasoning to Mary's intercessions on our behalf.

All Christians should have an intimate relationship with Jesus but also be united with Mary, holy men and women, and the other members of the Body of Christ in prayer.
