The honoring of those of our church, and family members, who have passed on to life eternal during the last twelve months will be held on November 4th at both services. A candle will be lit, bell chimed and names read. Printed in the bulletin will be listed those members and constituents, as well as those for whom we have held the memorial services for during the past year.

"Live Courageously" Stewardship Emphasis October 28 - November 11
In order to live courageously, a mindset of God's abundance and generosity needs to be present. Congregations that develop cultures of generosity inspire courageous living and incorporate annual practices that reinforce faithful, fruitful giving and engagement in good works. As we join together in our annual stewardship emphasis "Live Courageously", October 28 - November 11, may we be attuned to the intersection of courage, giving and sharing, as we look at how God is calling us to be generous.
During the week of October 29th, a mailing will go out with information on our "Live Courageously" program and will include a giving commitment card for 2019. During worship these weeks we will be celebrating the faithful generosity and ministries already in place, and looking to how God is calling us forward. We hope you will join us as we bring before God our willingness to support the ministries of the congregation through good works and generosity.

On Sunday, November 11 we invite you
to bring your completed commitment card to worship for Consecration Sunday
and then join us at 11:30 for our Celebration Potluck Dinner.
Worship at 10:30 will be led by the amazing Queen City Jazz Band.

Our dinner will feature delectable salmon prepared by our own Chef Clyde and Tuscan pot roast prepared by staff member Carol, with delicious sides and desserts provided by all of you.

UMC Evergreen is a holy, special church and welcoming community for ST and me. We've been members for 25+ years. Our family has grown spiritually in this church. It's the staff, ministry, programs, people and community that make it so: Pastoral Ministry, Music Ministry, Children & Youth Ministry, Office Staff, Worship, Adult Education and Fellowship. We think of Christmas Services & Dinners, baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals, Bake Sales, Rummage Sales, mission trips, church picnics, Fall Festivals; Family Promise, Vacation Bible School and Mother's Day Out for community outreach. We feel God's presence in the church staff, members, and programs that make it feel like home.

Calling all good cooks! The Alternative Gift Fair Bake Sale needs you. Linda Schroeder will pick up baked goods at our church Friday, November 9 around 3:00 p.m. If it is more convenient for you, you can drop off at the Lutheran Church from noon to 5:00 Friday.
Best sellers are pies, cookies (packaged in half dozens), candy, yeast and quick breads. Package nicely if you can (no saran wrap or foil), but if you don't have time, volunteers at the Fair will package them up. The Bake Sale proceeds all go to support the Gift Fair. Thank you.

The Alternative Gift Fair is a holiday gift fair hosted at Evergreen Lutheran Church and sponsored by UMCE and six other local congregations. Approximately 50 local, national and international nonprofits sell art, crafts, jewelry, clothes, cards and other items from around the world to support their projects around the world that help those in need. The AGF motto is "Buy Once. Gift Twice." When you buy a Christmas gift at the fair, it is a gift to your recipients as well as those in need served by the nonprofit vendors at the Fair.

- When you have clicked all the jobs you want to volunteer for, please click the green "Submit and Sign Up" button at the bottom of the page. You do not need to set up a SignupGenius account to volunteer at the AGF.
- You will be taken to a place to enter information about yourself. Please:
- Enter your name, email, phone number and any other required information; and
- Click to show your affiliation with the United Methodist Church of Evergreen.
- Do not sign up as a group using just one person's name. We need the info for each separate volunteer so we can reach him/her if there are changes.

Finding Hope in the Faces of the Oppressed
A presentation and conversation about injustices faced in the Philippines and at the US southern border through the experience of a Methodist volunteer, Brielle Hohne. Sometimes we view large scale issues through statistics, which distance us from the reality of the situation. The goal of the presentation and conversation is to put faces and real stories to the issues to bring us closer to understanding the people in these situations.
Brielle worked as a UMC volunteer in the Philippines and on the U.S.-Mexico boarder.
All are welcome to join us for this special evening. Please let the church office know if you plan to attend so that we can schedule a room that will work.

MOUNTAIN BACKPACKS PROGRAM
FOOD COLLECTION SERVICE PROJECT
Donations Taken: October 21 - November 11

UMCE and Church and Society Team partner with area community groups to support Mountain Backpacks. We will collect items listed below from October 21 - November 11 in Fellowship Hall. Our youth group will deliver the food to Evergreen Lutheran Food Pantry on November 11.
Mountain Backpacks is a supplemental food program whose mission is to help kids stay full and focused throughout the school year. We provide weekend meals, weekly snacks and holiday food boxes to families enrolled in our program. We support teachers by providing emergency snacks for their classrooms and we run food pantries to meet the needs of our older students. We are a service project of the Evergreen Rotary Foundation and Evergreen Lutheran Church and a proud partner of the Food Bank of the Rockies.

BAREFOOT MILE PLANNING TEAM

Dr. Jeff Brodsky, the voice of JOY International, spoke at our church on October 6. Attendees were moved as he shared his experiences in rescuing children and young women from the horror sex slavery. NOW it's time for action on our part!
Church and Society needs help to prepare for our work next spring. We are planning a community-wide program with Dr. Jeff on April 27, and a Barefoot Mile Fundraiser here in the mountain community on June 22. Specifically, we need someone with PR/Marketing experience to help us spread this news. In addition, we seek volunteers to contact businesses for their financial support. Since every dollar raised goes towards the rescue of a precious life, corporate sponsors bring in additional money to boost our BFM contributions. If you can respond to this call for action, please contact Jan Thurling at 720-391-9550, or at email: [email protected].
Lastly, but most importantly, we ask for your prayers to surround UMCE's preparation for these lifesaving efforts, for Dr. Brodsky's ongoing work, and for these precious children and young women in need of rescue. On behalf of those who wait for rescue, we thank you.

What is Verse Mapping? Verse Mapping is a method of studying the historical context, transliteration, translation, connotation, and theological framework of a verse in the Bible. Plain and simple? Verse mapping is getting real about studying the Bible. It is not just reading. It is researching everything you can in a verse to learn more about who God is and how God wants to speak to you through His word. We will learn to use a simple, five step process for Verse Mapping. MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB
|
One of my special home-away-from-home places when I was in elementary school was being with the Cohen family. Yes, their daughter, Audrey, was in my closest circle of friends. But it was more than that. They made sure this little Gentile girl was treated as a precious child of God, and included in the celebrations of their Jewish faith. There were the grandparents who had been through the Holocaust. There were stories of joy as well as fear shared - about the past and the present. I learned much about the Jewish faith first from its heart - from the family center.
Later, moving into ministry, I readily absorbed the studies of the Old Testament and my understanding of the Jewish faith deepened. Every confirmation class I have led, even if we travelled two hundred miles, has attended a Friday evening synagogue service and met with the Rabbi. It might seem like little, but in this, as in so much, we have the power and the voice to prevent anti-Semitism, and build caring, respectful attitudes and relationships.
When I arrived in Evergreen, it was a joy to discover the close relationship we have with Congregation Beth Evergreen, and Rabbi Jamie Foster was the first clergy to welcome me and take me to lunch. Some of our newer folk might not know that Congregation Beth Evergreen met here for 20 years until they built their synagogue. The painting in our narthex is a gift from them, as is the mezuzah on our front door.
I'm reflecting on this because of the horrifying synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh during Sabbath services this past Saturday. Rev. Tveit of the World Council of Churches said eloquently, "Anti-Semitism is a sin against God and humanity, and this attack upon a Jewish community in a place of prayer and during a moment of celebration of their religious identity is an appalling violation of our shared humanity."
I sent a text reaching out with our love, prayers and support to Rabbi Jamie and their congregation Saturday evening after the details of what had happened came out. He got right back to me in gratitude and grief, even though, as I later learned, he was in London visiting a daughter. I will be at the healing and affirmation service Friday evening, which Congregation Beth Evergreen has opened up to the community. It's at 7 p.m. and I hope some of you will be able to join me. May we continue to offer prayers and support for our Jewish friends and colleagues in this community and beyond.
