VOTE IS IN: COUNTY COUNCIL PASSES STRICT LEGISLATION ON STR'S
PGC Council passes legislation that will allow county to imposed standards, permitting, licensing, tax for short-term rentals...
With the meteoric rise of the short-term rental marketplace (and the platforms that support it, like Airbnb, VRBO, Homestay, Flipkey to name a few), governing bodies across the country are debating and weighing "cause & effect".

The key is finding ways to minimize any adverse impact such transactions have on area residents, communities and infrastructure. And, at the same time, providing standards (which are often inconsistent when self-governed) for such hospitality, that is outside of traditional spaces, places, and norms.

After lengthy review by the County, the Prince George's County Council passed companion legislation that will allow the county to administer standards, permitting, licensing, tax, and fees for short-term rentals. The legislation will also limit the duration of short-term rental stays, as well as cap the number of guest allowed.

CB-10-2018 and CB-11-2018 calls to "establish permitting and licensing requirements, fees, and standards for short-term rentals, and limits short-term rentals only to a homeowner's primary residence for specific amount of days each year". The final bill will now go before County Executive Rushern L. Baker III for signing.

D-STILL, MY BEATING HEART: PGC'S "FIRST" TRUE SPIRIT OPENS LATER THIS MONTH
Brothers-in-law combine their love for making spirits into Prince George's County's first distillery...
Take about brotherly love...in this case - brother-in-law love.

Nate Groenendyk and his brother-in-law Jeff Harner have independently been "basement brewmeisters" for more than a minute.  Over the past ten years, in the quest for the perfect pour, they've each dibbled & dabbled from hard cider  to craft beer.

Now, combining their appreciation for "spirits", they're set to open Prince George's County's first distillery, SANGFROID DISTILLING, possibly by the end of the month.  The goal is to open in time for the holidays.

Sangfroid is located at 5130 Baltimore Avenue in Gateway Arts District of Hyattsville. The craft distillery will specialize in unique fruit-based brandies (including Maryland's first pear brandy), classic Dutch-style gin (known as Genever), and rye whiskies.

In addition to the availability of handcrafted brandy, gin, whiskey, seasonal selections, and spirit collaborations, the location will have a small tasting room in front of the distillery. Expect Sangfroid to offer tastings select days of the week.

ON THE HORIZON: No confirmed opening date as yet, but the county's second craft distillery is in the making. SHMIDT SPIRITS will be located at 10369 Southard Drive in Beltsville (off Baltimore Ave). They are currently in retrofit/construction mode. We anticipate Schmidt Spirits operational within the first quarter of 2019. What we can expect from Shmidt is premium gin, rye whiskey, and white whiskey.

LOOP'D LOOP: PROPOSED HYPER-RAIL, FROM DC TO B'MORE, HAS PGC IN ITS PATH
Proposed "East Coast Loop" would get you from DC to Baltimore in 15 minutes, and have possible mini stations in Prince George's...
DC to Baltimore in 15 minutes? You've got to be kidding, right ?

Not if Ian Musk has his way. The  head of SpaceX and Tesla, recently highlighted a proposal (by  The Boring Company ) to build the EAST COAST LOOP - an underground, high-speed, rapid transit line from DC to B'more.

The line would run underneath DC's New York Avenue and the Baltimore Washington Parkway, covering the 35 mile trek in 15 minutes. Along the way, it could (at some point) possibly include mini stops (called "Loop Lifts") in Landover, Riverdale Park, College Park, and Greenbelt.

SO, WHAT THE HECK ARE WE TALKING HERE? A Hyperloop is a mode of transpo for passenger and/or freight that uses a sealed system (or tube) and vacuum technology. Sort of like those canisters at your bank's drive-thru, or new-age teller stations within the bank (in which tellers are actually huddled in an ultra-secret liar, communicating with you through a tiny six inch display.

ALPACA POWER: LOCAL FARM GETS NATIONAL PLAY ON PLATFORM FOR WOMEN IN AG
Angel Forbes Simmons & Villa De Alpacas featured on national program highlighting women in agriculture...
This from our "AGRI-TOURISM" file. Another Prince George' County farm has been featured on the award-winning program, FarmHer.

FarmHer takes viewers coast to coast on a journey, capturing the amazing stories of "agri" women and their accomplishments, connection and dedication to the land.

The program recently visited VILLA DE ALPACAS FARM (VDA) in Aquasco, one of only four remaining Bicentennial farms in Maryland. VDA is also one of the few Alpaca/Llama farms in the area. It is run by Angel Forbes Simmons, an admitted city girl, who chose to come home to run the farm that's been in her family for generations. She is also the driving force behind many of the fabulous products, made from luxurious Alpaca fur, featured in VDA's store (avail on site and online).

FARMHER...WELCOME BACK TO THE PGC: This is the second Prince George's County farm to be featured by FarmHer. Earlier this year, the program did a spotlight on Susan Watson White and Shelby Watson-Hampton of Robin Hill Farm & Vineyards. Located in Brandywine, Robin Hill is part of the new Legacy Wine Trail (which also includes three other "Brandywine" wineries).

DID YOU KNOW, WOMEN ARE INDEED PART OF THE SHOW? The testosterone-driven and fed images of farming in America don't tell the true story, and don't reflect farming in its entirety. Example..."a ccording to the USDA's most recent census report, the number of women-led farms has tripled over the past four decades and remains one of the fastest-growing groups in the United States. Females make up 32 percent of the farming workforce and are almost one million women strong". So, we salute our women farmers and operators that bring land to life in Prince George's County!

BIRDS OF A FEATHER: REFUGE AT CENTER OF EFFORT TO SAVE ENDANGERED CRANES
50 years in the making, program at Patuxent Research Refuge works to save endangered bird from the brink of extinction...
The NATIONAL WILDLIFE VISITOR CENTER is one of our favorite places in Prince George's. Serene, colorful, a naturally scenic paradise for anyone who enjoys pictures of nature, or being a part of it. It is open to the public and offers an interactive wildlife center, expansive areas for discovery, and tram tours thru the refuge.

But what few recognize is that it's based at one of the foremost wildlife research facilities in the country, the Patuxent Research Refuge (PRR).

The scope of PRR's work with wildlife and preservation is broad and groundbreaking.  One of its most significant initiatives is the effort to save the majestic Whooping Crane from extinction.

The Whooping Crane Restoration project, which began in 1966 is scheduled to come to a close this year.

DINE FIND: MGM DEBUTS NEW ITALIAN SPOT IN THE GRAND CONSERVATORY
New dine spot at MGM brings the flavor of the Amalfi Coast to National Harbor...
The concept comes to us by way of MGM's Mirage in Vegas. The new OSTERIA COSTA (OC) restaurant at MGM National Harbor is now open.

The OC brings the delectable taste of Italy's Amalfi Coast to the Potomac River waterfront and  National HarborWhat you can expect is a casual "coastline-type" vibe that's colorful, open, and inviting. The menu features a variety of wood-fired pizzas, handmade pastas, fresh seafood, and signature dishes you're sure to enjoy from the Italian coastline.

LEAF'N SPICE: LAUREL DINE CAPTURES CUSTOMERS FROM A FORMER "BEST EATS"
After the closing of Curry Leaf, Laurel gets its spice back with the emergence of a new Indian restaurant...
When the Curry Leaf Indian restaurant closed in July, many area diners were caught off-guard.

Concerns were legitimate as Curry Leaf was a true foodie fave and applauded by dine critics at WASHINGTONIAN mag as one of the very best "Cheap Eats" Indian restaurants in the DMV.

Filling the "Curry Leaf" void is AMBER SPICE, an Indian restaurant at 13524 Baltimore Ave in Laurel.  Amber Spice comes to us from the chef and several staff members that made Curry Leaf such a delight. As well as presenting some of the favorites from Curry Leaf, Amber Spice has added new recipes and tweeked others.

WRITER'S BLOCK: PGC RESIDENT'S PROSE MAKES WAY TO KENNEDY CENTER STAGE
Poetic verses convey the story of retribution and discovery as a young man has only an elevator ride to decide life or death...
As we close out this edition of News&Notes, we end with a tidbit from our "PROUD 2B PGC" file. Why? Because people are our greatest gift!

A book by noted Prince George's County author Jason Reynolds is the inspiration of a new "one person" play now on stage at the Kennedy Center (KC).

LONG WAY DOWN, closing out its KC run, is the compelling tale based on Reynolds' 2017 bestselling young adult novel of the same title.

It's the story of a young man who's just lost the older brother he adores to gun violence - at the hands of someone he believes he knows, who was once his brother's friend. As he wrestles with loss, he's confronted by those departed and the proverbial "street rule" that commands retribution.

Like the novel, the play is based entirely on poetic bursts of narrative verses. Experienced through the eyes of a teen who has one minute, and an arduous elevator ride, that will decide an act of life or death.

Reynolds has written over 10 books for young audiences. He's a New York Times bestseller,  winner of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Award for New Talent, and a  Newberry Honor recipient. Job well done Jason!
