It's time to 'Save the Date' for 2019
CrimeStoppers' theatre fundraiser

Mark your calendars now: Friday, May 10, 2019.

That's the date of this year's Bobbye Weinberger CrimeStoppers Night At The  Theatre event, featuring a performance of one of Broadway's all-time great shows -  Cabaret - at Playhouse On The Square.

The affair begins at 6 p.m. at the Playhouse main-stage theatre, 66 South  Cooper Street, in Midtown, with a full dinner. The show begins at 8 p.m. and seating  is always open. Cabaret, a musical, tells the story of characters in an anything-goes  nightclub in Berlin between the wars, a time when many fail to guess what horrors  lie ahead.

Tickets are $75 apiece. Early birds can pay for and reserve their tickets now  on the CrimeStoppers website.  Tickets will be mailed or delivered in person. Donors also may sponsor the  attendance of one or more police officers and guests on the online purchase form.

"In past years generous donors have sent more than 110 officers and their  guests to the shows," said E. Winslow (Buddy) Chapman, executive director of  CrimeStoppers. "We hope our supporters will do the same this year."

CrimeStoppers is grateful to the family of Bobbye Weinberger for being this  year's title sponsor.

How the area's 'most wanted' fugitives
turn into the 'most recently arrested'

Each week during the year, fugitives from justice are added to the Most Wanted list for Memphis and Shelby County. The fugitives jumped bail, failed to appear in court or otherwise fled warrants.

One recent week's list was fairly typical:

Four people were wanted for aggravated robbery, three for aggravated assault.

One person was wanted for aggravated stalking, aggravated assault, aggravated burglary and for violation of bail conditions. Three other individuals were sought for identity theft, reckless driving plus intentionally evading arrest, and for vandalism.

Once local law enforcement agencies are informed of the individuals on the infamous list, CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County posts the names, photos and charge information on every wanted man and women. The list is maintained with notations when a fugitive is found and arrested.

Often, the fugitives are hiding out locally and are soon located and brought to trial - always a risky operation by men and women "in blue" - thanks to citizens who contact CrimeStoppers with tips that help authorities find them.

FEBRUARY
2019

Fighting crime -
by the numbers

Each month the Awards Committee of the CrimeStoppers board of directors considers cases that were solved with the help of citizen tips received the previous month and determines the cash amounts to be given to the tipsters, who remain anonymous throughout the process and are identified only by a code.

In early February, a heavy load of cases came before the committee.Tips from 32 people had led to the arrests of 33 criminal subjects - 28 men and five women - and the closing of 39 felony cases from 2018 in police files. One tip alone solved nine separate thefts.

A total of $14,900 in awards were handed out, including two $1,000 awards for tips that provided enough helpful information to solve two first degree murders. The tips during January also solved five carjackings, one vehicular homicide, three attempted murders and a kidnapping.
